David H. Baker
has been one of the most productive animal scientists of our time. He has
directed 35 Ph.D, 18 M.S., and 3 postdoctoral students. He and his research
collaborators (mostly Ph.D. trainees) have published 435 papers in
peer-reviewed outlets (journals, books). He also has authored 260 abstracts and
178 popular articles. He has served on four NRC subcommittees, including the
1976–1978 and 1994–1998 Swine Nutrition Subcommittee. He was appointed to the
NAS Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources in 1998.
Dr. Baker’s
contributions to amino acid nutrition and metabolism and to vitamin and mineral
bioavailability have been outstanding. Recognitions for his accomplishments in
research have been numerous. He has received five ASAS research awards (Midwest
Young Scientist Award, AFIA Nutrition Award, Roche Outstanding Research Paper
Award, Gustav Bohstedt Award, and Morrison Award), five PSA research awards
(AFIA, Broiler Research Award, Merck Award, Research Manuscript Award, and
Fellow) and two ASNS awards (Borden Award and Research Paper Award). In 1987,
he received the USDA Distinguished Service Award in Research. In 1986 Baker was
named a University Scholar at Illinois, the highest honor attainable at his
university. Dr. Baker’s contributions to animal nutrition have had, and will
continue to have, a significant impact on the livestock industry throughout the
world.
