Eugene J. Eisen

 

Eugene J. Eisen was born in New York City and worked on farms in the state of New York during high school and college. He received his degrees from State University of New York at Farmingdale (A.A.S., 1957), University of Georgia (B.S.A., 1959), and Purdue University (M.S., 1962; Ph.D., 1965). Dr. Eisen joined the Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State University as an assistant professor in 1964, and he became a professor in 1973. In 1988, he was named a William Neal Reynolds Professor.

Dr. Eisen’s contributions to animal breeding and genetics set him apart as an outstanding scientist. His productivity is evidenced by over 150 refereed publications and 100 abstracts and proceedings. The respect of his colleagues is evidenced by the numerous invited papers, lectures, and short courses he has presented in Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Finland, and Australia, as well as at many U.S. universities.

Dr. Eisen has been the recipient of many honors and awards recognizing his contributions to science. At North Carolina State University, he received the Sigma Xi Young Researcher’s Award (1972), the Gamma Sigma Delta Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award (1977), and the Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award (1991). He received the Rockefeller Prentice Memorial Award in Animal Breeding and Genetics from ASAS in 1986 and was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1998.
