Stephen P. Ford was born on October
11, 1948, in Palo Alto, California. He received the B.S. degree in animal
science from Oregon State University in 1971 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in
reproductive physiology from West Virginia University and Oregon State
University in 1973 and 1977, respectively. He was a research physiologist at
the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, NE from 1977
to 1979 before he joined Iowa State University, where he is Professor of Animal
Science. Dr. Ford is nationally and
internationally recognized for his insightful studies into the control of blood
flow to the gravid uterus and the metabolic and endocrine factors affecting
embryo-fetal growth and survival in domestic livestock species. In addition to
a very active research program (8 Ph.D. and 12 M.S. degree students) he teaches
undergraduate and graduate courses in reproductive physiology and participates
in extension activities. Dr. Ford has contributed greatly to ASAS; he recently
served as president of the Midwestern Section of ASAS and has just completed
three years as Section Editor of the Physiology and Endocrinology Section of
the Journal of Animal Science. His
expertise is sought after by colleagues, students, and producers, and he is
solicited for service on numerous national, regional, and university
committees. Recognition of his teaching and research contributions includes the
Iowa State University Livestock Service Award (1984), Midwestern Section ASAS
Younger Animal Scientist Award (1988), and the Iowa Regents Faculty Excellence
Award (1996). Dr. Ford and his wife, Marsha, have three daughters, Tamara Lynn,
Joanna Christine, and Jessica Gale.
