Dennis N. Marple received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from
Iowa State University in 1967 and 1968, respectively, specializing in Meat
Science. He obtained a Ph.D. degree
from Purdue University in 1971 with emphasis on Meat Science and Environmental
Physiology and did postdoctoral studies on animal physiology and meat quality
at the University of Wisconsin.
In 1973 he joined the faculty of Animal and Dairy Sciences at Auburn
University, where he taught animal growth and development and conducted
research in animal growth, meat quality, shipping fever, and fescue toxicity
until he was appointed head of the department in 1989. He was the first recipient of the
Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Southern Section of ASAS, was named
Alumni Professor by the Auburn University Alumni Association, and twice
received the annual Outstanding Research Award from the Director of the Alabama
Experiment Station.
He became head of the Animal Science Department at Iowa
State University in 1992, with administrative responsibilities for instruction,
research, and extension programs. He is
a past president of ASAS, a past president of the Southern Section of ASAS, a
former member of the boards of directors of ASAS and CAST, and is treasurer of
the Federation of Animal Science Societies. He is also a member of the
Agricultural Advisory Committee of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and
serves as an ex-officio member on the boards of directors of the Iowa Pork
Producers Association and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.
