Doyle E.
Wilson was born in 1944 and raised on an Iowa farm. His B.S. in aerospace
engineering from ISU in 1967 was followed by 9 years in the Air Force in development.
After 3 years of farming, he received his M.S. in 1982 and Ph. D. in 1984 in
animal breeding from Iowa State University (ISU). He became the first extension
livestock systems specialist at ISU developing PC programs for producers and
was the first in developing and implementing national genetic methodology for
beef, sheep and horses. His active research and technology transfer program in
ultrasound technology, genetic methodology, and program development in this and
other countries has garnered more than $2.8 million in extramural funding. He
has published 34 journal articles, 38 abstracts, more than 270 research reports
and popular press articles, and numerous software programs. In 1996, his
position was changed to research and teaching with leadership for a beef
breeding project, teaching graduate courses, and responsibility for the
national cattle evaluation programs for the American Angus Association, with
which he has worked more than 15 years. His international reputation is based
on systems development, national genetic programs, genetic methodology,
ultrasound technology including evaluation for marbling, and beef breeding
research. He has spent extended periods of time in Argentina, South Africa,
and, more recently, in Mexico, assisting animal breeders in these countries
putting genetic improvement programs on-line. Research and technology transfer
to the livestock industry are paramount to his career.
