Arseneau receives Hubbard Feeds, Inc. Graduate Award for Beef

Jeff D. Arseneau received the 2001 Hubbard Feeds, Inc. Graduate Award for Beef during the American Society of Animal Science awards ceremony on July 27.  This award recognizes students demonstrating outstanding potential in the research of nutritional sciences of food animals, specifically in the areas of beef, dairy, swine and poultry production.

After working as a Regional Livestock Specialist for the University of Minnesota Extension Service, Arseneau is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Ruminant Nutrition at Purdue University, under the direction of Dr. Ronald Lemenager.

Arseneau’s research is centered around the effects of beef cattle finishing strategies and management practices on performance, meat quality, and economic return.  His research studies have included evaluation of creep feeding, weaning age, and finishing strategy on performance and carcass traits; impact of different implant strategies and energy substrates on lipogenic enzyme activity; effects of increased number of days on feed performance, fat accretion curves, tenderness, and economic return; comparison of ionophores for early weaned steers; comparison of different beef carcass aging methods and lengths on palatability and microbial survival; and nutritional strategies to reduce phosphorus excretion.

In addition to conducting research, Arseneau has assisted in teaching the applied animal nutrition and beef cattle management courses, is assistant to the director of the Five-State Beef Initiative, serves as a member of the Purdue Beef Team and the IQ+BEEF preconditioning/quality assurance program committee, and has served as president of the Animal Sciences Graduate Student Association for two years.

This award is sponsored by Hubbard Feeds, Inc.
