Beitz receives 2001 Fellow Award for Research

Donald C. Beitz, a distinguished professor at Iowa State University, received the 2001 Fellow Award for Research at the American Society of Animal Science Award ceremony in Indianapolis on Friday, July 27.  The Fellow Award, sponsored by the American Society of Animal Science, recognizes ASAS members for their distinguished service to the animal industry for 25 years or more.  Each nominee must have made exceptional contributions to the animal industry, to an animal related discipline, or to ASAS; must have had continuous professional membership in ASAS for a minimum of 25 years; and must be in good standing with the Society.

Beitz's teaching responsibilities include the seminar in animal nutrition, physiological chemistry, agricultural biotechnology colloquium, and general biochemistry.  He has taught over 7,500 students during his 33-year teaching career.  He gains much satisfaction from advising undergraduate students in agricultural biochemistry and graduate students in biochemistry, nutritional physiology, and MCDB.

In addition, his research activities have been collaborative, diverse, and related to practical problems of animal agriculture and human nutrition.  His research has focused on milk fever, lactation ketosis, plasma cholesterol, milk and carcass composition, mitochondrial DNA and milk production, and beef tenderness.

Dr. Beitz earned  B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural Sciences and Dairy Nutrition from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Dairy Nutrition and Biochemistry from Michigan State University.
