Dr. Gary Bennett received the 2001 Rockefeller Prentice Award at the American Society of Animal Science Award banquet in Indianapolis on Friday, July 27. This award honors research excellence in animal breeding and genetics and is sponsored by ABS Global, Inc.
Bennett, a research leader for the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, has contributed
to several areas of breeding and genetics research throughout his career. Through his research, Bennett evaluated efficiency of swine crossbreeding systems which led to periodic rotational crosses to balance heterosis in breed utilization, studied lamb carcass genetics to increase New Zealand’s lean lamb production, and led a team that developed a model of body and carcass composition that is part of a decision-support software for beef cattle. He also designed and led two selection experiments in cattle for age at puberty and for calving ease and is responsible for continued development of the bovine linkage map at MARC.
Bennett’s research is creative and focuses on industry concerns, which has led to his research being reported in more than 60 refereed papers and 90 other research reports.
