Bonner Receives 2001 Fellow Award

 

Dr. John M. Bonner was honored with the 2001 Fellow Award at the American Society of Animal Science awards ceremony in Indianapolis on Friday, July 27.  The Fellow Award, sponsored by the American Society of Animal Science, recognizes ASAS members for their distinguished service to the animal industry for 25 years or more.  Each nominee must have made exceptional contributions to the animal industry, to an animal related discipline, or to ASAS; must have had continuous professional membership in ASAS for a minimum of 25 years; and must be in good standing with the Society.

 

Bonner, received his B.S. in Dairy Science, M.S. in Animal Production, and Ph.D. in Nutritional Physiology. degrees from Iowa State University. His research focused on steer growth and milk fat depression as affected by 1,3-butanediol.

His career began at Commercial Solvents Corporation, where his initial responsibilities were to coordinate the development of technical/marketing materials for their products. He initiated projects that involved over thirty Land-Grant Universities that demonstrated the profitability of implanting calves.

As chairman of the ASAS Extension Committee, he introduced training for ASAS members in interpersonal skills and media interactivity. He coordinated funding and symposium projects as the first chairman of the ASAS Foundation Board. He has also arranged for funding for numerous ASAS receptions and Extension Specialist awards. His current responsibilities at Land O’Lakes/Farmland (LOL/FL) involve development of livestock business systems and beef team personnel. He has incorporated ARPAS certification into the LOL/FL beef training program.

His influence has been effective from farm/ranch production training to research in support of governmental drug regulatory clearances. Dr. Bonner strives for mutual understanding between all segments of our industry and is dedicated to supporting the animal protein industry in efforts to provide consumers with safe, high-quality products.
