Hughes honored with 2001 Extension Award

 

Dr. Joe Hughes was honored with the 2001 Extension Award at the American Society of Animal Science Awards banquet in Indianapolis on Friday, July 27.

 

Hughes served as Oklahoma’s first Extension 4-H Youth Livestock Specialist from 1971-2000.  During this time he developed an outstanding program that excelled in scope, intensity, effectiveness, and educational emphasis.  He assisted in adapting the nose-printing method of identifying steers used throughout the United States and initiated a bred-and-owned female classes for beef, sheep, and swine at Oklahoma state shows, developed the “Youth Knowledge College”, worked to incorporate carcass evaluation and performance in Oklahoma livestock shows, and was a national leader in strengthening ethics in youth livestock programs.

 

He has been recognized with the Southern Section Extension Award, and the Distinguished Service Awards from the Oklahoma and National Association of 4-H Agents, the Oklahoma and National Association of County Agricultural Agents, the Oklahoma Jr. Cattlemen’s Association, the Sirloin Club, and the Oklahoma Farm Bureau, and he has been honored as an outstanding professor in agriculture at OSU.

 

The Extension Award, sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health, recognizes outstanding achievements in animal science extension.
