Wilson and Rouse Share 2001 Animal Industry Service Award
Doyle
Wilson and Gene Rouse were honored for their distinguished service to the
animal industry. This award is donated
by Pharmacia Animal Health.
In support of the beef industry, Wilson and Rouse’s 20 years of
collaborative research and extension programs at Iowa State University have
developed real-time decision-making technologies for beef producers. Their initial collaboration in 1983
developed the Beef Feedlot Monitoring Program, a PC-based program that projects
cattle performance and breakeven costs.
Subsequently, they have developed and implemented ultrasound
technologies that effectively estimate body composition and meat quality in
live cattle. There most recent research
has implemented a centralized center for processing ultrasound information for
interpretation in an unbiased and quality-controlled processing laboratory.
The information from this center is now being used by 14 national breed
associations to enhance the rate and magnitude of genetic progress in beef seed
stock animals. The results of these
collaborative efforts are allowing beef producers to make informed and timely
management decisions that benefit the beef food chain.
