Thrift Honored by American Society of Animal Science

 

Dr. Frederick A. Thrift was awarded the 2001 Fellow Award for Teaching during the Annual American Society of Animal Science awards ceremony on July 27.  The Fellow Award, sponsored by the American Society of Animal Science, recognizes ASAS members for their distinguished service to the animal industry for 25 years or more.  Each nominee must have made exceptional contributions to the animal industry, to an animal related discipline, or to ASAS; must have had continuous professional membership in ASAS for a minimum of 25 years; and must be in good standing with the Society.

 

After obtaining degrees from University of Florida, University of Georgia, and Oklahoma State University, Thrift, became a professor at the University of Kentucky.  During his 34 years at the University, he has advised 2,500 undergraduate students and spent 30 years as the advisor to the University’s Block and Bridle Club.  He also serves as the coordinator of Undergraduate Teaching.

 

Over the years, Thrift has authored numerous professional papers and received awards for his teaching.  These include:  1981 Gamma Sigma Delta Distinguished Teaching Award, 1992 ASAS Distinguished Teaching Award, and the 1997Advanced Degree Graduate of Distinction Award from the Department of Animal Sciences, Oklahoma State University.

 

In addition to teaching, Thrift helped ASAS develop the Academic Quadrathalon, which improves teaching effectiveness and undergraduate participation.
