Zimbelman Receives 2001 ASAS Foundation Appreciation Award

Robert G. Zimbelman was honored for his years of service to the American Society of Animal Science and the entire Animal Industry during the American Society of Animal Science Award banquet in Indianapolis on Friday, July 27. This award is sponsored by the American Society of Animal Science Foundation.

Zimbelman began his career in science as a graduate student and, following his Ph.D. degree, at Upjohn, where he capitalized on the company’s steroid hormone and prostaglandin expertise to develop innovative new products for animals.

For industry, he made critical scientific contributions to the Animal Health Institute.  For ASAS, he originated the Animal Industry Service Award and assisted with the Casida Award, served on several ASAS committees, became the first ASAS Midwestern Section president from industry, and served on the ASAS Board of Directors.

Then, Zimbelman helped create the office of ASAS Executive Vice President.  In this office, he intensified our consciousness of opportunities in Washington and helped us to do something about them. His command of science opened the way for him in Washington because he offered solid scientific bases for decisions. He helped create FASFAS and the FASFAS Congressional Science Fellow program, guided the Animal Agriculture Coalition, and helped to organize FAIR’95 and CoFARM. These activities were instrumental to the formation of FASS and the increased Washington outreach activities with animal groups, other scientific groups, and government.

Zimbelman permanently changed the structure of ASAS and has institutionalized their activities in Washington.
