Allee receives 2002 Nonruminant Nutrition Research Award

 

Savoy, Ill., - Gary L. Allee, professor, University of Missouri-Columbia, was recognized as the recipient of the 2002 Nonruminant Nutrition Research Award.  The award will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on Monday evening as part of the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting, July 21-25 in Quebec City.

 

Allee received a B.S. and an M.S. degree in animal husbandry from the University of Missouri-Columbia and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, where he was awarded an NIH Traineeship in Nutritional Sciences.

 

He accepted a faculty appointment as assistant professor at Kansas State University and was promoted to associate professor in 1975 and to professor in 1981. In 1987, Allee accepted a position at the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he served as professor and chairman until 1992.

 

Professor Allee has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Animal Science; has served on the NRC Swine Nutrition Subcommittee; has served as vice-president, president, and director of the Midwest ASAS; and has served on the faculty council of the University of Missouri-Columbia. He received the Young Scientist Award from the Midwest ASAS and the Special Award for Excellence by the Kansas Pork Producers.

 

In the past 10 years, Professor Allee has published over 100 scientific and technical papers and advised six doctoral students. Dr. Allee has been a pioneer and visionary in swine production and has made significant contributions in nutrition of the pig. His research has most recently been responsible for identifying genetic improvements in feed grains that enhance nutritional value, and reduce phosphorus and nitrogen excretion by the pig. He has played a pivotal role internationally in swine nutrition and production. His research has impacted swine production in the U.S. and globally.

 

The American Feed Industry Association Award recognizes research excellence in the nutrition of nonruminant animals.  The winner receives a monetary award and a plaque.
