Brumm honored with 2002 ASAS Extension Award

Michael C. Brumm, Extension Swine Specialist, has been named the recipient of the 2002 ASAS Extension Award.  The award will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on Monday evening as part of the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting, July 21-25 in Quebec City.  The award is sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health.

 

Brumm was reared on a grain and livestock farm near Osage, Iowa. He obtained a B.S. degree from Iowa State University. Following two years of military service, he earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at Purdue University.

 

After spending a year as area livestock specialist for Oklahoma State University, he accepted a position as assistant professor/extension swine specialist at the University of Nebraska in Concord. Brumm has developed an extension and research effort addressing management of the post-weaned pig that is internationally recognized. Brumm’s extension program has excelled because of his perception of future problems, his awareness of related research, and his ability to translate research results into practical recommendations with consideration of the economic consequences of these recommendations. Brumm is recognized for his cutting-edge research on critical management issues related to receiving feeder pigs.

 

Brumm’s achievements have been recognized by numerous awards and honors: ASAS Animal Management Award; Gamma Sigma Delta Extension Award from the Nebraska Chapter; University of Nebraska honors including Distinguished Extension Specialist, Cooperative Team Programming Award, Team Effort Award, Livestock Service Award and Excellence in Extension Programming; as well as numerous awards from county and state organizations.

 

The ASAS Extension Award recognizes outstanding achievements in animal science extension.  The winner receives a monetary award and a plaque.
