Buchanan named ASAS 2002 Distinguished Teacher
Dr. David Buchanan, professor, Oklahoma State University, is being awarded the ASAS 2002 Distinguished Teacher, during the Awards Ceremony on Monday evening as part of the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting, July 21-25 in Quebec City. The award is sponsored by Purina Mills, Inc.
He received degrees from
North Dakota State University and the University of Nebraska. He joined
Oklahoma State University in 1980 and was promoted to professor in 1988. His
teaching career has been striking for its diversity, innovation, and concern
for students. It has involved courses at every level. He regularly teaches animal genetics, animal breeding, capstone
for animal agriculture, advanced animal breeding and an honors class titled
“The Frankenstein Thing.” He provided the original vision and structure for the
popular “Breeds of Livestock” web site and has been progressive in his use of
computer technology in teaching.
He offers his expertise in
teaching and statistical analysis to graduate students and has been adviser for
24 graduate students. He regularly advises 40 to 60 undergraduates, has been
adviser for eight student clubs, and has developed numerous youth programs. He
is an author on 60 refereed articles and more than 300 other publications.
Dr. Buchanan has been chair
of the OSU faculty, president of the Southern Section of ASAS, and was program
secretary for the 1996 ASAS meeting. He has received teaching awards from
Collegiate FFA, OSU Mortar Board, Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigma Delta, NACTA, Ag
Ambassadors, the OSU Regents, and Southern Section of ASAS.
The Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes outstanding undergraduate professors that have been teaching for 8 years or more in animal science. The winner receives a monetary award and a plaque.
