Chew
receives 2002 Jim Corbin Award in Companion Animal Biology
Dr. Boon Peng Chew, professor, Washington State
University, is the recipient of the 2002 Jim Corbin Award in Companion Animal
Biology. The award, sponsored by The
Iams Company, will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on Monday, July 22
as part of the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting in Quebec
City.
Chew, reared in Malaysia, was awarded a Public Services
Department Scholarship to attend Louisiana State University, from where he
graduated with a B.S. in animal science in 1974. He entered graduate school at Purdue University to study
reproductive and lactation endocrinology, and received an M.S. in 1976 and a
Ph.D. in 1978.
Chew was awarded a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship
and worked at the University of Illinois from 1978 to 1979. Dr. Chew joined the
animal sciences faculty at Washington State University in 1979 and quickly
established an active, multi-disciplinary research program into the effects of
carotenoids on reproductive physiology, immunity, and cancer. He was the first to show that the domestic
dog and cat readily absorb carotenoids from the diet. He further demonstrated that these carotenoids enter blood
leukocytes and quench harmful oxygen species, thereby protecting cells. He reported that dietary carotenoids enhance
cell-mediated and humoral immunity in both dogs and cats. Through his efforts, b-carotene
and lutein are now incorporated into commercial dog food to enhance health.
While at WSU, he has trained 19 graduate students in
nutrition immunology and he has received $3.75 million in extramural
funding. He has published 85 referred
papers and delivered 47 invited talks.
Dr. Chew was honored with the International Roche Research Prize for
Animal Nutrition in 1993.
The Jim Corbin Award in Companion Animal Biology recognizes research and teaching excellence in companion animal biology. The winner receives a monetary award and a plaque.
