Dr. Gary L. Cromwell, professor, University of
Kentucky, is this year’s recipient of the Morrison Award. The award, sponsored by the F.W. Morrison
Fund, will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on Monday, July 22 as part
of the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting in Quebec City.
Cromwell received a B.S. degree in agricultural education
from Kansas State University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in animal nutrition
from Purdue University. He joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in
1967, where he is a professor in the Department of Animal Sciences.
Dr. Cromwell has served the swine and feed industries
through outstanding research for more than 35 years—research that has
identified him as a world expert in swine nutrition. His broad-based research
has included assessment of amino acid and mineral requirements of swine, copper
as a growth promotant, efficacy and safety of antibiotics, nutritional value of
genetically modified crops, and environmental aspects associated with use of
phytase in swine diets. He developed a slope-ratio assay to determine the
bioavailability of phosphorus in feedstuffs, allowing the formulation of diets
on an "available phosphorus" basis.
Cromwell is the author or co-author of more than 900
publications, including 137 refereed journal articles. He has directed 60 graduate students, many
of whom have prominent roles in the feed industry or academia. Cromwell served
as president of ASAS in 1989-1990 and was nonruminant nutrition section editor
of the Journal of Animal Science. He presently serves as chair of the
National Research Council's Committee on Animal Nutrition and chaired the
subcommittee that prepared the 10th edition of Nutrient Requirements of Swine, in 1998. He previously received the
ASAS Industry Service Award and the ASAS-AFIA Nutrition Research Award.
The Morrison Award recognizes research excellence
with direct importance to livestock production. The winner receives a watch, a bust of Dr. Morrison mounted on a
plaque and a monetary award.
