Ely receives 2002
Fellow Award for Teaching
Dr. Donald Gene Ely, professor, University of Kentucky, is the recipient of the 2002 ASAS Fellow Award for Teaching. The award will be presented as part of the Awards Ceremony on Monday, July 22, during the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting in Quebec City.
Ely, an Oklahoma native, received his undergraduate education and M.S. degree from Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. He has been heavily involved in undergraduate education throughout his 34-year career at the University of Kentucky.
Over 2,500 undergraduates have enrolled in his courses, and he has advised over 500 undergraduate students during his career. Dr. Ely is a strong believer in “interactive” and “hands-on” instructional methods. He has won numerous teaching awards and is considered one of the best teachers in the college and at the university. He has advised the UK Block and Bridle Club and Alpha Zeta Honorary for the past 29 years. These organizations are among the strongest and most active on campus.
Dr. Ely is nationally and internationally recognized as an outstanding sheep nutritionist. The new sheep research facilities that he designed at the University of Kentucky are among the best in the entire country. Dr. Ely uses these facilities and the university sheep flocks for both research and teaching, making animals available for undergraduate instruction to many classes in the department and college. Dr. Donald Ely is nationally recognized as an outstanding teacher of agriculture. His effectiveness in the classroom is superlative. Students love his enthusiasm and this carries over into their performance in other classes as well as into later life.
