Savoy, Ill., - Dr. Joseph P. Fontenot, professor, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI), is being awarded the ASAS 2002 Foundation Appreciation Award, during the Awards Ceremony on Monday evening as part of the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting, July 21-25 in Quebec City. The ASAS Foundation sponsors the award.
After teaching at Oklahoma State University and Mississippi State University, Fontenot joined the faculty of VPI in 1956. During this time he has been involved mainly with graduate training and research. His main areas of research have been the use of underutilized by-products as feedstuffs, mineral nutrition, and forage utilization. Throughout his career 36 persons have earned the Ph.D. and 60 the M.S. degrees under his direction.
Fontenot was awarded the AFIA and Morrison awards by ASAS and the Medallion Award by the American Forage and Grassland Council. He was named Man of the Year in Southern Agriculture in 1978. He has served as ASAS Southern Section president, ASAS president, and president of the Equine Nutrition and Physiology Society. From 1979-82, Fontenot served as chairman of the Committee on Animal Nutrition, National Research Council. He also was chair of the committee that selected the first person who served as ASAS executive vice president in Washington, D.C.
