Gaines awarded 2002 Omega Protein
Innovative Research Award
Aaron M. Gaines is this year’s recipient of the Omega Protein Award. The award, sponsored by Omega Protein, will be presented during the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting, July 21-25 in Quebec City.
Gaines
graduated magna cum laude in May 1999 from the University of Missouri with a
B.S. in agriculture science. After
graduation, Aaron he worked in the feed industry for United Feeds as a research
assistant.
At
United Feeds, he gained considerable interest in swine nutrition and decided to
pursue a M.S. degree in animal sciences.
In the fall of 2000, Gaines began his master’s degree at the University
of Missouri under the direction of Dr. Gary Allee. During his graduate program, Gaines has conducted several
experiments in both the laboratory and commercial pork production
settings. His research has included the
effect of the starter feeding program on nursery and grow-finish pig
performance, evaluation of modified grains for growing swine and poultry,
nutritional and environmental effects of pigs fed high amino acid diets, pre-
and postweaning growth of pigs injected with glucocorticoids, and nutritional
modifications that enhance immune response.
Gaines
was recently awarded a graduate competition award and the National Pork Board
award at the 2002 Midwest Animal Sciences meeting. After completion of his M.S. degree in August, Aaron plans to
pursue a Ph.D. Eventually, he hopes to obtain an industry position and continue
research in swine nutrition.
The Omega Protein Innovative Research Award promotes and rewards original and innovative research using marine fish products (meal or oil) in nutritional programs for swine, poultry, beef, dairy, horses, aquaculture, and companion or exotic animals. The winner(s) receive a monetary award.
