Johnson receives 2002 ASAS Fellow
Award
Lawrence A. Johnson has been named an ASAS Fellow. The award will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on Monday evening as part of the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting, July 21-25 in Quebec City.
Johnson was
awarded degrees from University of Wisconsin at River Falls and the
Universities of Minnesota and Maryland. Johnson retired in 2000 from USDA, ARS,
Beltsville, MD, after 36 years, the last nine of which were as research leader
of the Germplasm and Gamete Physiology Laboratory.
Johnson
developed the technology for separating X- from Y-chromosome–bearing sperm
based on DNA content. His work demonstrated that the sex ratio could be altered
to 90% of either sex. This technology is being applied commercially in
livestock production and in human medicine. Dr. Johnson sought to advance the
international swine artificial insemination industry and succeeded in
introducing the BTS semen extender for use in swine AI worldwide; he was
co-developer of the Beltsville methodology for freezing swine semen.
Johnson has authored or co-authored more than 350 articles, 190 of which are in refereed journals. He has served on the editorial board and various committees of ASAS. He is the cofounder and organizer of the International Conference on Boar Semen Preservation. He was awarded the Alexander van Humboldt Award in 1994 and has received the Physiology and Endocrinology award from ASAS and the Distinguished Senior Scientist for USDA, ARS and is a 2001 inductee of the USDA, ARS, Science Hall of Fame.
