Kennelly receives 2002 Ruminant Nutrition Research Award
Dr. John Kennelly is the 2002 recipient of the
Ruminant Nutrition Research Award, sponsored by the American Feed Industry
Association. Kennelly will receive his
award as part of the Awards Ceremony on Monday, July 22, during the American
Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting in Quebec City.
Kennelly came to Canada from
Ireland in 1977 to study for his Ph.D. at the University of Alberta. In 1980 he
was appointed to the position of assistant professor of dairy cattle nutrition,
and he was promoted to professor in 1987.
His contributions to nutrition research, teaching, and extension span a
period of 22 years and his publications include 130 refereed articles, 80
conference proceedings/book chapters, and 180 abstracts.
His extension service includes 20
years as the program director for the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar, which
attracts over 500 people each year. Kennelly’s research program has emphasized
the integration of nutritional research across the spectrum, which spans the
evaluation of feedstuffs and nutrient digestion and utilization in the rumen
and intestine to the effects of the absorbed nutrients on milk yield and milk
composition—with the overall goal of improving the biological efficiency of
milk production and its quality as human food.
He
has supervised 19 graduate students and 10 postdoctoral fellows. John is chair
of the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science at the
University of Alberta, a member of the board of directors of the National
Institute of Nutrition, a member of the college of reviewers for the Canada
Research Chairs Program, and a member of NSERC’s Scholarship and Fellowship
Committee. He also served as a member of the Royal Society of Canada Expert
Panel on the Future of Food Biotechnology and the Alberta Science and Research
Authority Biotechnology Task Force.
The American Feed Industry Association Award
recognizes research excellence in the nutrition of ruminant animals. The winner receives a watch, a bust of Dr.
Morrison mounted on a plaque and a monetary award.
