Dr. Dennis O. Liptrap is the recipient of the 2002 ASAS Fellow Award in Extension. The award will be presented as part of the American Society of Animal Science Awards banquet on July 22 during the Annual Meeting in Quebec City. The Fellow Award, sponsored by the American Society of Animal Science, recognizes ASAS members for their distinguished service to the animal industry for 25 years or more. Each nominee must have made exceptional contributions to the animal industry, to an animal related discipline, or to ASAS; must have had continuous professional membership in ASAS for a minimum of 25 years; and must be in good standing with the Society.
Liptrap has rendered
distinguished and honored service as a Swine Extension Specialist at the
University of Kentucky. After receiving
his B.S. degree in animal science from the University of Kentucky in 1965 and
his Ph.D. in swine nutrition from Michigan State University in 1969, he
returned to the University of Kentucky as a state swine specialist to begin his
career in the extension service.
Dr. Liptrap believes the
role of a swine extension specialist is to assist producers with the selection
and application of technology appropriate to their individual resources of
capital, management, labor, and land. His swine extension programs were
visionary and futuristic. He believes in teamwork and has led multidisciplinary
teams to address producer needs.
He has received outstanding service awards from the Kentucky Pork Producers Association, National Association of Swine Records, and the animal science department at his university. In the mid-1990s, Liptrap left the University of Kentucky to become president and CEO of IPKY, Inc., an 1,800-sow farrow-to-finish operation in central Kentucky. He is also employed now by a major feed company as a technical consultant.
