McGlone receives 2002 Animal Management Award

John J. McGlone, animal science professor at Texas Tech University, is the ASAS Animal Management Awardee for 2002. The award, sponsored by Merial, will be presented during the Awards Ceremony on Monday, July 22 as part of the American Society of Animal Science Annual Meeting in Quebec City.

He was educated in animal science and ethology at Washington State and Illinois, and his first appointment was at the University of Wyoming.  In 1989 he moved to Texas Tech University, where he founded an outstanding research, teaching, and outreach program in livestock ethology, husbandry, and production, especially pigs.  He and collaborators have contributed much to our basic knowledge of pig behavior, immunology, their interaction, and how these apply to pork production.

He is a popular teacher of pork production and other Texas Tech courses at all levels. In outreach activities, McGlone specializes somewhat off mainstream: very large integrated farms, outdoor pig production, High Plains enterprises.  He actively supports and promotes the Texas pork industry, providing materials in various media plus workshops and on-site advice.  He is consultant to the National Pork Board on animal-welfare issues.

McGlone has contributed to such scholarly and service endeavors as being the first animal-scientist member of the AAALAC Council on Accreditation, member of the CAST task force on well-being of agricultural animals, and chair of the swine subcommittee writing the farm-animal care guide. McGlone has contributed to ASAS, including chairing its Animal Care Committee and serving as JAS Environment and Behavior section editor.  He has been active in numerous other scientific, industry organizations.

The Animal Management Award recognizes research excellence in biological or production management and honors those who have made significant contributions to production management.  The winner receives a monetary award and a plaque.
