Meisinger receives 2002 Fellow Award
Dr. David Meisinger is the recipient of the 2002 ASAS Fellow Award Industry. The award will be presented as part of the American Society of Animal Science Awards banquet on July 22 during the Annual Meeting in Quebec City. The Fellow Award, sponsored by the American Society of Animal Science, recognizes ASAS members for their distinguished service to the animal industry for 25 years or more. Each nominee must have made exceptional contributions to the animal industry, to an animal related discipline, or to ASAS; must have had continuous professional membership in ASAS for a minimum of 25 years; and must be in good standing with the Society.
Meisinger joined ASAS in 1973 as a graduate student
at Southern Illinois University. After earning his Ph.D. from Iowa State
University, he spent a short time there as an ISU Extension area field
livestock specialist. The rest of his career has been in industry. He became
director of Research and Education for the National Pork Producers Council,
followed by managing global programming for new swine products at IMC/Pitman
Moore. When an opportunity arose in the packing industry in a new start-up
plant, Indiana Packers Company, he jumped at the chance. He left there with the
CEO to start the 5,000-sow Fetterman Farms in east-central Illinois. After
those ten years in various industry capacities, Meisinger returned to the
National Pork Producers Council as assistant vice-president of pork quality,
where he has been the past six years.
His personally conceived program ideas included the
System for Assuring Pork Quality, PORK 101, Sulfa-Safe pork, Trichina Safe
pork, Trucker Quality Assurance, the Pork Quality Research Initiative, and many
more.
He is a very respected and sought-after speaker in
the industry in this country and worldwide. He has served as president of
ARPAS, Midwest ASAS, and the Agricultural Research Institute. He is in his
sixth year as secretary-treasurer of American Meat Science Association.
