Wilson
receives 2002 Fellow Award
Lowell L. Wilson is the recipient of the 2002 ASAS
Fellow Award At-Large. The award will be presented as part of the American
Society of Animal Science Awards banquet on July 22 during the Annual Meeting
in Quebec City. The Fellow Award,
sponsored by the American Society of Animal Science, recognizes ASAS members
for their distinguished service to the animal industry for 25 years or
more. Each nominee must have made
exceptional contributions to the animal industry, to an animal related
discipline, or to ASAS; must have had continuous professional membership in
ASAS for a minimum of 25 years; and must be in good standing with the Society.
Wilson is a native of Illinois and
a veteran of the United States Army. He
earned a B.S. in agricultural education with a minor in biology at the
University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He
then moved to South Dakota State University, where he earned an M.S. and
received his Ph.D., majoring in animal breeding with minors in statistics and
biochemistry.
He was responsible for cow-calf
systems at Purdue University from 1964 to 1966. He founded the Indiana Cattlemen's Association and was
instrumental in initiating electronic processing of beef performance records in
Indiana and South Dakota. In 1966 he
moved to The Pennsylvania State University, where his research included breed
evaluation, pasture and waste utilization, veal production, transportation
stress, and public/producer assessment and evaluation of quality assurance
programs.
He has authored or co-authored 142
peer-reviewed journal articles, over 160 abstracts, 600 popular-press articles,
and several book chapters. He has
taught undergraduate and graduate courses and supervised over 45 graduate
students. He was instrumental in
formation of the PA Cattlemen's Association and PA Beef Council, Pennsylvanians
for the Responsible Use of Animals, Penn State's Students for the Responsible
Use of Animals, PA Beef Expo, and numerous other educational events. Wilson's curiosity and dedication have
enabled him to identify and seek solutions to significant problems in animal
agriculture.
