ASAS Announces 2004 Award Winners

Savoy, Ill., - The American Society of Animal Science is proud to announce its 2004 award winners.  These outstanding students and professional scientists were recognized for their achievements on July 26, 2004 during the awards ceremony at the ASAS Annual Meeting in St. Louis, MO.

Morrison AwardDr. Dale E. Bauman, Liberty Hyde Bailey professor, Cornell University, is being recognized for his outstanding research and dedication to the animal sciences.  F.W. Morrison Fund sponsors this award.

American Feed Industry Association Award in Nonruminant Nutrition ResearchDr. Guoyao Wu, professor, Texas A&M University, is being honored for his dedication to Nonruminant Nutrition research.  The American Feed Industry Association sponsors this award.

American Feed Industry Association Award in Ruminant Nutrition ResearchDr. Joel Caton, Animal Science Professor, North Dakota State University, is being honored for his excellent research in ruminant animals.  The American Feed Industry Association sponsors the award.

Animal Growth and Development AwardDr. Lloyd L. Anderson, Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture Professor of Animal Science, College of Agriculture, Iowa State University, is being honored for his research in mechanisms regulating relaxin and progesterone secretion and their effects; effects of antiprogesterone; and neuroendocrine mechanisms regulating growth and reproduction in farm animals.  DSM Nutritional Products, Inc. sponsors this award.

Animal Industry Service Award – Dr. James E. Pettigrew, Professor of Animal Science, University of Illinois.  He is being honored for his outstanding service in the animal industry.  The award is sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health.

Animal Management AwardDr. David L. Thomas, professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Mr. Yves M. Berger, Superintendent and Sheep Researcher, Spooner Ag Research Station, receives this award for their research with dairy sheep and sheep genetics.  This award is sponsored Merial.

Animal Physiology and Endocrinology AwardDr. Gary L. Williams, Regents Fellow & Professor, Texas A&M University, is being recognized for his contributions to animal physiology and endocrinology research.  The award is sponsored by the Monsanto Company.

Distinguished Teacher AwardDr. Keith M. Irvin, professor, The Ohio State University, is being recognized for dedication to the undergraduate students.  This award is sponsored by Land O’Lakes, Farmland Feed LLC, and Purina Mills LLC.

ASAS Extension AwardDr. John A. Paterson, Professor of Animal Science & Extension Beef Specialist, Montana State University is being honored for outstanding contributions to animal science extension.  Pfizer Animal Health sponsors this award.

ASAS Fellow Awards – The status of Fellow recognizes members of the American Society of Animal Science who have rendered distinguished service to animal science and the livestock industry over a long period of time.

This year’s Fellow winners are:  Teaching: Marshall H. Jurgens, professor, Iowa State University; Extension:  Dr. Larry Corah, Vice-president, Certified Angus Beef Program; Industry:  Dr. David D. Anderson, Elanco Animal Health, Retired; Research:  Dr. Harry J. Mersmann, Research Chemist, Children’s Nutrition Research Center; Administration:  Dr. Guy H. Kiracofe, Retired Chairman of Department of Animal Sciences, University of Kentucky;  At-Large:  Dr. Norlin J. Benevenga, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Richard Robson, Iowa State University, and Dr. Vernon Pursel, BARC-East.

Bouffault International Animal Agriculture AwardDr. Colin G. Scanes, Professor, Mississippi State University, is being honored for his research in livestock nutrition.  The Center for Regulatory Services, Inc. sponsors this award.
