As many of you know, ASAS will celebrate our Centennial at the ASAS-ADSA Joint Annual Meeting in Indianapolis in July of 2008. To kick off the celebration we are having a “party” at the Opening Session including music by the Bellamy Brothers and a video retrospective highlighting the major accomplishments of the last 100 years of Animal Science and of the Society. In addition, to the celebration associated with the Opening Session, we plan to provide all meeting attendees with a free copy of the ASAS Centennial Coffee Table Book. As described by David Ames, the ASAS Centennial Coffee Table Book has been designed to describe pictorially, “What is Animal Science?”. Within the program, our major goal is to create an environment that presents an interactive history of Animal Science and the Society. In order to achieve this goal, historical papers will be incorporated into the program and presented as they were initially presented in oral presentations over the last 100 years, and throughout the exhibit hall we will have numerous historical exhibits. Finally to ensure that during our Centennial we are not just looking at the past, but moving forward, we will be launching the new ASAS strategic plan at the 2008 ASAS-ADSA Joint Meeting. We are writing to request support from members for our Centennial Celebration and for the establishment of the Next Century Endowment. As an enduring way to recognize and continue promoting the Centennial spirit, the ASAS Board of Directors and the ASAS Foundation Trustees have approved our proposal to create a fund to help finance the Centennial Celebration and begin an endowment named the Next Century Fund, designed to support the creation and launching of new membership programs. We have had an amazing 100 years, it is time to celebrate and prepare for the future. The goal of the ASAS Foundation is to garner at least $250,000 in donations for the Centennial Celebration and the establishment of the Next Century Fund, with $100,000 being used to support events at the Celebration and $150,000 to initiate the endowment. Until $250,000 is reached, unless individuals specify differently, 40% of each donation will go to support the events at the Centennial Meeting and 60% will be placed in the Next Century Fund. After the endowment is funded, new program proposals will be presented to the Foundation yearly for requested funding. We are thrilled to announce that Dow Agri has already pledged $25,000 to this cause, consequently we are already 10% of the way to our goal. We are hoping with the support of our membership and the Animal Science industries, we will be able to fund an outstanding celebration and pave the way for the next 100 years. Individuals and companies who contribute, or pledge, $500 or more between now and December 31, 2008 (book will already be published), will be identified in the ASAS Centennial Coffee Table book and on a plaque to be housed at the ASAS headquarters office. In addition, individuals who donate $100.00 or more will receive a Centennial packet including a Centennial pen, pad and a bumper sticker. Individuals that donate more than $250.00 will receive a Centennial baseball cap, and individuals that donate more than $500.00 will receive a Centennial shirt. If you can help, please make your check payable to the ASAS Foundation or provide your credit card specifics, specify that your gift is for the Centennial Celebration and Next Century Fund, and mail to:
If you have questions, please contact a member of the ASAS Foundation. Our goal is to fully fund the Centennial Celebration and Next Century Fund before the end of our Centennial year. |
