The annual meeting of the Southern Section, American Society of Animal Science will be held in Memphis, Tennessee on January 30 to February 3, 1998, in conjunction with the 96th Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists. Additional information is on the SAAS web site.
Hotel Reservations: The Animal Science Meeting will be in the Peabody Hotel. Information will be sent in October directly from Vernon Boggs, Secretary/Treasurer, SAAS.
Call for papers: Abstracts must be submitted on or before October 15, 1998. Those submitted after October 15 will not be accepted. Papers will be presented on February 1 to 2, 1999. The quality standards for abstracts are enclosed. A 2X2 slide projector will be provided in each room. Authors requiring other presentation equipment such as LCD projectors must make arrangements with the Program Chair, or furnish your own.
Submission Requirements: Submission requirements are outlined in Instructions for Abstract Submission included in this mailing. After reading these instructions, if you have any questions regarding submission, contact Paula Schultz, ASAS Business Office. Please forward one paper copy of the abstract to Dr. L. Lee Southern, Southern Section ASAS Secretary/Treasurer, Department of Animal Science, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA 70803, and three paper copies to the Program Chair of the section in which the abstract is submitted.
Meeting Registration: Registration for both the Southern Section American Society of Animal Science and the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists will be in an area to be designated in the Peabody. Registration fees for the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists will be $30.00 for members and $5.00 for graduate students. The Southern Section American Society of Animal Science registration will be $10.00 for members and $5.00 for graduate students. Extra copies of abstracts will be available at $5.00 per copy. The registration area will also serve as a message center. Persons wishing to advertise positions or search for positions should send a position description or C.V., respectively, to L. Secretary/Treasurer Elect Election: The nominating committee selected two nominees for the position of Secretary/Treasurer Elect. Please return the enclosed postcard ballot to indicate your preference for the position. The postcard must be returned to the National Office by October 15, 1998.
Graduate Student Awards Competition Papers: Papers for the Awards Competition will be submitted as outlined above. Competition papers should be identified in the cover letters. The Awards Competition Committee will select up to fifteen (15) abstracts, based on scientific merit, for presentation. Dr. Don Franke, Louisiana State University will send rules and guidelines on awards competition to each selected participant. Please note that a manuscript is not required for participation in the awards competition. The contestant must be the senior author, be 35 years of age, or less, at the time of submission, and cannot hold academic rank above assistant professor. Persons who have placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in previous Awards Competitions are ineligible. Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three placings, respectively. The criteria for evaluating the competition papers will be: clearness and correctness of the abstract; knowledge of the subject area; research quality and innovation; organization of presentation; presentation and personal attributes; and appropriate use, clarity, and number of visuals.
Undergraduate Research Paper Competition: Junior or senior level students from institutions in the Southern ASAS Region with degree programs in Agriculture are encouraged to present data from their research efforts. Abstracts for the research paper competition should be submitted according to the directions described in "Call for Papers." Abstracts submitted for the Undergraduate Research Competition should be identified in a cover letter. University verification that the student is enrolled, at the time of abstract submission, must accompany the abstract. Note that the author may be a graduate student at the time the paper is presented. The abstracts will be reviewed by the Teaching and Undergraduate Committee. Please note that a manuscript is not required for participation in the Undergraduate Research Paper Awards Competition. The criteria for evaluating the competition papers will be: clearness and correctness of the abstract; knowledge of the subject area; research quality and innovation; organization of presentation; presentation and personal attributes; and appropriate use, clarity, and number of visuals. The papers will be presented in the Teaching and Undergraduate Session. Prestage Farms will sponsor this competition this year.
Distinguished Service Award: Each year the Southern Section recognizes and honors one of its members for outstanding service to the livestock industry. Any Southern Section member working in the Southern Region (defined in Paragraph 4, Article VII, Page 604, J. Anim. Sci., Vol. 24, May 1965) is eligible. Nominations should be submitted to Dr. A. H. Brown, University of Arkansas. Nominations must be supported by six (6) copies of biographical data, including: 1) biography of nominee, 2) summary statements on work and importance to animal science and the Southern Region, and 3) any other important recognition that would support the nomination. Nominees must be members of the American Society of Animal Science for two (2) consecutive years prior to the date of their nomination. Nominees are not carried forward from year to year; therefore, nominators should update and resubmit data on those previously nominated. Nominations must be postmarked no later than October 15, 1998.

Young Animal Scientist Award - Education: Submit nominations to Dr. James Sartin, Auburn University.
Young Animal Scientist Award - Research: Submit nominations to Dr. D. L. Thompson, Jr., Louisiana State University.
