Michael C. Brumm was born June 4, 1949 and reared on a grain and livestock farm near Osage, Iowa. He obtained a B.S. degree in agricultural education from Iowa State University in 1971. Following two years of military service, he earned M.S.(1976) and Ph.D. (1978) degrees at Purdue University. After one year as an area livestock specialist for Oklahoma State University, he accepted a position as assistant professor/extension swine specialist at the University of Nebraska's Northeast Research and Extension Center, Concord, Nebraska. He was promoted to associate professor in 1985 and professor in 1992. Brumm rapidly became recognized because of his cutting edge research on critical management issues related to receiving feeder pigs. Because he is a co-leader of the Nebraska Swine Enterprise Records program, Brumm has the unique ability of applying economic consequences to management decisions. An estimated 75% of the postweaning facilities being constructed and managed in the United States use research results generated by Brumm on the economic impact of floor space allocation on growth performance. In addition, an increasing number of pork producers and allied industry advisors are using his research results regarding selection and management of feeders and waterers. Brumm's contribution to animal management has been his perception of future problems, his awareness of related research, and his ability to translate research results into practical recommendations with consideration of the economic consequences of these recommendations. He has been a program speaker at 537 pork industry meetings throughout the United States has and written 154 research publications, 105 extension publications, two book chapters, and one computer software program. He has consulted with over 1,200 pork enterprises and presented seminars in three foreign countries. Michael Brumm has received the University of Nebraska-Walnut Grove Livestock Service Award, Pork Industry Service Award from the Nebraska Pork Producers Association, the University of Nebraska Excellence in Team Programming Award, and Pork Booster Awards from Knox County, Cedar County and Northeast Nebraska Area Pork Producer Associations. Brumm and his wife, Janet, are the parents of four children.
