Michael L. Galyean graduated from New Mexico State University (NMSU) in 1973. He then attended Oklahoma State University, where he received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in 1975 and 1977, respectively. In 1977, he joined the faculty of NMSU in Las Cruces. For more than a decade, Galyean worked extensively to characterize forage intake and digesta kinetics in cattle that graze western rangelands. When his interest shifted to feedlot nutrition and the management and nutrition of newly received feeder cattle, he moved in 1990 to the Clayton Livestock Research Center in Clayton, NM. In 1996, Galyean joined the faculty at West Texas A&M University at Canyon to initiate a new research and teaching program in feedlot cattle nutrition and management. In 1998, he accepted the position of Thornton Distinguished Professor of Animal Science at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, where his research focuses on nutrition and management of feedlot cattle. Michael Galyean's research program in ruminant nutrition has emphasized feedstuff utilization, protein and energy metabolism, mineral and vitamin nutrition, and management of feed intake by feedlot cattle. He and his colleagues have published 387 refereed articles, invited papers and book chapters, proceedings, reports, and abstracts. Galyean is currently a member of the editorial board of the ASAS in the Applied Animal Science section, and he has served two terms on the Ruminant Nutrition section and one term as section editor of the Ruminant Nutrition – Pasture and Forage Utilization section. He also served as a member of the ASAS board of directors, as president of the ASAS Western Section, and is currently secretary of ARPAS.
