October 2009

Subject: Call for Nominations for Professional Awards, Student Awards, and Student Travel Scholarship
To: Members of the American Society of Animal Science
From: Ronnie D. Green, President-Elect ASAS

I am pleased to invite you to nominate colleagues and students for appropriate ASAS awards. This is an excellent way to recognize the contributions of your colleagues and students. Successful nominations often result from updating nominations from previous years. The list of ASAS awards to be presented at the 2010 ADSA, ASAS, WSASAS, CSAS, PSA, AMPA Meeting in Denver, Colorado, July 11-15 is shown below.

PROCEDURES: The submission process has been developed to make the award procedure more convenient and efficient. All nominations are submitted on the ASAS web site http://www.asas.org/awards.asp (mailing copies is not required). Complete instructions can be found on the web site.

DEADLINE: All nominations must be SUBMITTED on the web site no later than February 24, 2010 (exceptions noted below).

Names of all nominators will be published in the Annual Meeting Awards Program without listing nominees.

INSTRUCTIONS: The latest version of General Rules and Regulations for ASAS Awards (Amendment to Handbook for Awards) can be found on the awards web site (http://www.asas.org/awards.asp). The printed handbook is not applicable. Nominators are encouraged to review the instructions carefully and to follow the guidelines for the respective nominations to avoid rejected nominations.

Neither oral nor written communications that support a submitted nomination should be conducted between the nominator or others and the committee members of the respective award committee. Evaluations are to be based only on the submitted materials.

ELIGIBLITY: Retirees are eligible and can be nominated for awards if they met membership requirements at the time of retirement.

International Travel Scholarship: January 7, 2010 is the deadline for the Wilson G. Pond Appreciation Club International Travel Scholarship. The purpose of the award is to aid in the professional development and success of young animal scientists in an international venue. Nominees must be an ASAS early career member (for at least 12 months). Early career member is defined as a member that is a student, post doctoral fellow or within 10 years of their Ph.D. graduation date. If request is for attendance to a meeting, preference will be given to individuals giving a presentation. Complete information can be found at http://www.asas.org/awards.asp.

Graduate Student Travel Scholarships: The Dr. Joe Fontenot Appreciation Club and The Dr. H. Allen Tucker Appreciation Club have established scholarships to support graduate student travel to and participation in the annual ASAS meetings. The clubs will offer Graduate Student Travel Scholarships to the 2010 meeting in Denver. Graduate students presenting research papers may apply for travel support by submitting an application (http://www.asas.org/awards.asp). As with other awards, applications are due by February 24, 2010.
