Grad Students Actively Involved in 2010 JAM

Starting the week off with a critical evaluation of graduate student course curriculum strengths and weaknesses, many graduate students took an active role in improving their graduate education. The graduate symposium, “Transitions: Preparing for your future”, was widely attended by 120+. Talks ranging from the importance of leadership to exploring non-traditional career paths for animal science students addressed many questions faced by graduate students entering industry after graduation. Focusing on the challenges and opportunities of those entering academia after graduation, guest speakers addressed surviving the manuscript publication process, transitioning to the role of an assistant professor and earning tenure, as well as how to best embrace the change, challenges, and opportunities of a future in animal science. The graduate student focus group was also help on Monday to discuss ASAS membership benefits for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as post-doctoral researchers. Finishing off Monday with a bang, graduate students filled the Blake Street Vault during the joint graduate student mixer. Not only was this a great chance to catch up with old friends, and meet new friends, the ASAS Past President, President, and many other board members and faculty stopped by to have a drink in honor of graduate students! On Tuesday, the graduate student Lunch and Learn had great participation and discussion. With a panel of industry leaders, government regulatory researchers, faculty with research, teaching, and/or extension appointments, and individuals who had worked in both academia and industry, any question was fair game! Discussion topics ranged from how to choice between academia and industry, how to make yourself stand out to interviewers, and how to compete in a global market. Overall, this year’s graduate student events were a huge success. If you have any comments or input, feedback from this year or recommendations for next year, please contact Heather White (hmuse@purdue.edu)!
