ASAS FOUNDATION APPRECIATION CLUB GUIDELINES

DESCRIPTION OF AN APPRECIATION CLUB

Members of the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) are indebted to each other. Many have been students of members of ASAS or benefited from the work of members of ASAS. Thus, the ASAS Foundation supports the formation of Appreciation Clubs to honor outstanding members of ASAS. Formation of Appreciation Clubs will allow those who have benefited from the work of a particular member of ASAS to make a gift for special activities in the name of the honored person.

RECOGNITION ASSOCIATED WITH AN APPRECIATION CLUB

1.      The Purpose of an Appreciation Club is to provide public recognition of the professional accomplishments of a member of ASAS. The Appreciation Club will provide both recognition of and on-going emphasis to the area(s) championed by the honoree.  An Appreciation Club is established for an individual whose contributions to animal and food sciences have been national/international in scope.

2.      The Uniqueness of an Appreciation Club is inherent a) in the opportunity to contribute financially to ensure funding in support of the Specific Purpose of the Club (activities associated with the contributions made by the honoree), b) to interact with the honoree and Appreciation Club members to establish and implement the Specific Activities of the Club, c) to provide value added to members through the Specific Activities, activities that may not be available through General Fund funding, and d) provide an option for individuals to support Specific Activities of value to themselves and to their colleagues.

3.      The Value created by Appreciation Clubs is inherent in a) establishing a long-term publicly visible acknowledgement of the accomplishments of the honoree, but in a manner that provides value to the ASAS membership for the duration of the Specific Activities and their legacy through publications, b) bringing together ASAS members with a common interest in order to foster that interest, and in support of the entire membership of ASAS, and c) the Specific Activities for the Club will contribute to the value of the ASAS program through support of teaching, training, professional development, etc, activities that normally would not be funded through the ASAS General Fund.

ESTABLISHMENT OF AN APPRECIATION CLUB

  1. An Appreciation Club is “Chartered” when funded at $12,500 within a five-year interval from initial solicitation. An Appreciation Club is “Fully Funded” when funded at  $25,000 or greater within a four-year interval after achieving “Charter” status. If a Club fails to achieve “Chartered” status within five-years or fails to achieve “Fully Funded” status within four-years after achieving “Charter” status, the funds will be used consistent with the Working Practices Of An Appreciation Club (see this Section below).
  2. The Proposal for Initiation of an Appreciation Club should include:
  3. A proposal to establish an Appreciation Club will be submitted to either the ASAS Foundation Chair or the ASAS Executive Director. Upon acceptance of the proposal by the ASAS Foundation Trustees, a written agreement for acceptance and support will be developed among the honoree, the initiative leader(s), the ASAS Foundation Chair and the ASAS President.
  4. Individuals, groups, companies and corporations contributing at least $500 will be identified as Charter Club Members and their names/identities will be placed on the “Fully Funded” plaque that is to be presented to the honoree or their designee. The Plaque will be presented to the honoree at the ASAS Annual meeting Awards ceremony.

WORKING PRACTICES OF AN APPRECIATION CLUB

1.      The individual(s) responsible for leading the establishment of the Appreciation Club or their designee will work with the ASAS Board to implement the Specific Activities of the Club.

2.      The Executive Director of ASAS, who serves as the ASAS Foundation Treasurer, will administer the Appreciation Club funds. Financial administration policies of the ASAS Foundation will apply to the assets of the Appreciation Clubs. A financial report of the Appreciation Club will be made upon request to the honoree and the person(s) responsible for establishing the Club. These individuals will be consulted also as to the duration of the club.

3.      When funds either are insufficient to fund the Specific Purpose or the charter members and honoree so direct, the residual funds will be combined with the general fund of the ASAS Foundation and the Specific Purpose activities will cease. These Appreciation Clubs then will be recognized as a Fully Funded Appreciation Club in Perpetuity.
