Janet Beagle, FASS-ASAS 2003 Summer Intern PR

Janet Beagle, an Animal Science student at the Southern Illinois University-Carbondale has been selected as FASS-ASAS 2003 Summer Intern. Beagle is currently pursuing her M.S. in Animal Nutrition and is investigating the digestive fate of genetically modified corn fed to weanling swine. It is one of her life's ambitions to promote agriculture as core curriculum within public education and to help bridge the misunderstanding that exists between the agricultural and non-agricultural communities.

Beagle grew up in suburban Massachusetts where she became involved in 4-H and the American Rabbit Breeder's Association during high school. She raised five breeds of rabbits and wrote and marketed Bun Run News, a newsletter on raising rabbits. After high school, she attended Delaware Valley College in Pennsylvania where she worked at the school's livestock facility, helped found the school's writing center, and became president of the Delta Tau Alpha Honor Society. During this time, she also penned “Surviving College: A collection of thoughts…and lack thereof”, a booklet that was sold through the school's bookstore. After graduating with a bachelor of science in large animal science and a minor in English, Janet worked for two years as a veterinary receptionist for a small animal practice in Massachusetts.
During her internship, Beagle will have the opportunity to learn about the federal legislative and regulatory process. She will also attend Washington, DC meetings on animal science issues and Congressional and agency hearings, as well as travel to the ADSA-ASAS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ. Finally, Beagle will assist the FASS – Office of Scientific Liaison in tracking federal legislation and regulations and research legislative and regulatory issues.
