Questions about Individual Subscriptions to the Online Journal of Animal Science

What is available without a subscription?

All users of the ASAS Web site have access to the tables of contents, abstracts, and implications sections for all the Journal of Animal Science (JAS) articles in our electronic archive (October 1995 to the present). In addition, other information about the American Society of Animal Science, links to related sites, and access to the FASS Job Resource Center (placement ads)  are available to all visitors to the site.

I am an ASAS member. Can I access the electronic version of JAS?

Yes. All classes of individuals (professional, graduate student, undergraduate student, postdoctoral fellow, retiree, sustaining member) who have current memberships can access the full-text version of the electronic JAS at no additional cost. An electronic subscription to JAS is an ASAS member benefit. Each member is assigned a member number, which appears on your yearly renewal form and on your ASAS membership card. It is very important that you make note of your number or carry your ASAS membership card with you; without this number you cannot access JAS online. New members of ASAS are mailed a new member packet that includes a membership card imprinted with their member number.

How do individuals subscribe?

Those who are not currently members of ASAS but would like to join can print out and mail or fax the ASAS Membership Application. After it is processed, you will receive a new member packet that gives you information about ASAS, including your member number for accessing JAS online. You may also choose to subscribe, at an additional cost, to the print version of JAS.

How do I access the full text?

Access for individual members  is controlled by ASAS member number and surname (family name). Your subscription can be used from any computer with an Internet connection. When you click on the "Journal of Animal Science" link from the ASAS home page a screen will be displayed that includes a listing of available JAS issues (October 1995 to the present), along with a login box. Typing in your surname and ASAS member number will give you access to complete JAS articles in PDF format.

Who is allowed to access the full text?

Current ASAS members are the only authorized users of their assigned member numbers. Any sharing of member numbers is a violation of the terms and conditions of use.

I’m an ASAS member but I do not know or have forgotten my User ID. What do I do?

If you are a current member and do not know your member number, you may send an E-mail to ASAS Headquarters requesting your member number. Note that it is very important that you keep track of this number. Although we are happy to supply you with this information if you forget your number, administrative costs are increased substantially by requests from members who have misplaced their member numbers. Please include your full name in the E-mail message.

What is the term of my membership?

Memberships in ASAS are based on the calendar year, and you will have access to the electronic JAS archive during each calendar year in which you are a member. Dues for memberships that are begun any time after the beginning of the year are the same as those for memberships begun January 1. Members who join ASAS after the beginning of the year and choose to subscribe to the  print version of JAS will receive the back-issues for that year that were mailed before they joined ASAS.

What if I cancel my membership?

Access to the article database is for the length of the membership period only. You will not have access to full-text articles after if your membership expires. However, you do have the right to download and store articles for future use during the time you are a member of ASAS.

May I create my own database of JAS articles, or post an article to my or my department's Web site?

Yes, you may compile your own archive of articles in PDF format or post an article published online to your Web site. We require that you post the PDF version of the article as it appears on the JAS Web site, without any manipulation of the PDF file. This file includes copyright information that must appear on the article. If you post a version of the article other than the final, accepted version represented by the PDF file you must not imply it is the final version as it appeared in JAS. Posting of all or a substantial number of articles from an issue of JAS on another Web site is not permissible.

How does the electronic version work?

Complete JAS articles appear on the ASAS Web site before the print version of JAS is mailed. You can  view tables of contents for each issue along with abstracts and implications sections for all articles within your Web browser without additional software. All complete articles are in PDF format, which requires that the free Adobe Acrobat Reader be installed on your computer. A link for downloading the free Acrobat Reader is supplied on our Web site. An optional electronic notification service is available on our Web site that will notify you via E-mail when the latest issue of JAS has been posted.
