  • The ASAS Foundation portfolio has performed at a 10% rate of return during the 2012 year.
  • The ASAS Foundation has received almost $80,000 in pledges or donations during 2012.
  • The ASAS Foundation used funds to support the following initiatives in 2012:
    • Animal Frontiers: The Foundation is a Sustaining Partner and a Foundational Partner in Animal Frontiers. The Foundation provided key support dollars for the magazine in 2012, ensuring enhanced distribution of the magazine worldwide.
    • AnimalSmart.org: The Foundation provided start up funds for the creation and launch of AnimalSmart.org. Since creation, the program has led to the creation of a new membership category, Junior Animal Scientist, and since launch we have garnered more than 300 Junior Animal Scientists.
    • General Foundation Funds Support Awards: The General Foundation Fund was used to support the following awards: ASAS Retiree Service Award (recipient: Joseph Fontenot), Animal Physiology and Endocrinology Award (recipient: Jeffrey Stevenson), and Early Career Awards (recipients: Paul Beck, Robert Rhoads, and Kelly Swanson). The general fund also supported two communications interns in 2012.
    • ASAS Past Presidents Club: Funds from this club were used to support the 2012 Awards and the 2012 Awards Celebration. Specifically these funds supported release of the ASAS Living Histories, the Presidential Picks Poster Session, the “I am an animal scientist” advertising campaign, and the ASAS AQ Finals.
    • Allee Symposium supported by the Allee Appreciation Club: The Allee Symposium was held in conjunction with the 2012 Midwest Meeting. The symposium was composed of 4 experts in the field of swine nutrition and was attended by more than 400 attendees.
    • Baker Symposium supported by the Baker Appreciation Club: The Baker Symposium was held in conjunction with the 2012 Midwest Meeting. The symposium was composed of 7 experts in the field of amino acid nutrition and was attended by more than 300 attendees.
    • Ritchie Symposium supported by the Ritchie Appreciation Club: The Ritchie Symposium was held in conjunction with the 2012 Midwest Meeting. The symposium was composed of 5 experts in the field of beef production and was attended by more than 150 attendees.
    • Schingoethe Symposium supported by the Schingoethe Appreciation Club: The Schingoethe Symposium was held in conjunction with the 2012 Midwest Meeting. The symposium was composed of experts on the lactating dairy cow and was attended by more than 150 attendees.
    • Triennial Reproduction Symposium supported by the Lauderdale Appreciation Club: This flagship JAM symposium was attended by more than 200 people this year with a 2012 focus on Impediments to Fertility in Domestic Animals.
    • Gary L. Cromwell Awards supported by the Cromwell  Appreciation Club: The inaugural award was given at the 2012 JAM to Jerry Spears.
    • Stahly/Peo Award supported by the Stahly/Peo Memorial Tribute: This award is presented at the annual Midwest Meeting and is presented to the outstanding Swine Nutrition Graduate Student. The 2012 recipient was Cassandra Jones.
    • Bouffault International Animal Agriculture Award supported by the Bouffault Fund: The award was given at the 2012 JAM to John Mabry.
    • Fontenot Travel Awards supported by the Fontenot Appreciation Club: Three national travel awards were given in 2012 to A. P. Foote, B. E. Aldridge, and O. N. Genther. Two travel awards were given at the 2012 Southern Sections.
    • Tucker Travel Award supported by the Tucker Appreciation Club: One award was given in 2012; the recipient of the 2012 award was Monica VanKlompenberg.
    • Pond International Travel Awards supported by Pond Appreciation Club: Three awards were given in 2012; the recipients were Blaire Aldridge, Keenan McRoberts, and Leticia Camacho.
    • Morrison Award supported by the Morrison Fund: The highest honor a member of ASAS can receive is the Morrison Award. The 2012 Award was given to Mike Galyean.
    • Casida Award supported by the L. E. Casida Fund: The Casida is only given every three years and is one of the highest honors given to a physiologist in the society. In 2012, the Casida award recipient was Ron Randel.
    • Zimbelman/Hafs Public Policy Internship supported by the Zimbelman Appreciation Club and the Hafs Appreciation Club: Two internships were awarded in 2012, the recipients were Chris Gambino and Megan Bryant.
  • In 2012, ASAS Foundation dollars were used to provide approximately $75,000 in direct support to the members of ASAS!
