Harold D. Hafs Appreciation Club
This fund was formed to recognize the contributions of Dr. Harold Hafs to the American Society of Animal Science. Beginning in 2010, the money from this club is being used in collaboration with money from the Zimbelman Appreciation Club to support an undergraduate animal agriculture policy internship in Washington, D.C.
Harold Hafs has been a pioneer in developing techniques to freeze semen and synchronize estrus in cattle, with over 324 published papers and abstracts. He has published extensively on pituitary and hypothalamic control of reproduction, and he was a major contributor to understanding pubertal development. In service, Hafs accepted professional responsibilities within ASAS, ADSA, and SSR. In ASAS for example, he initiated peer reviews of abstracts for the Physiology and Endocrinology section, served on the Board of Directors, and was a founding member and chair of the Foundation Board of Trustees. Hafs has also contributed his expertise for NIH, FDA, NRC, NAAB, and USDA. As examples of leadership, he was chair of the Department of Dairy Science at Michigan State University, vice president for Animal Science at Merck, and chair of the Department of Animal Sciences at Rutgers University. From 1995 on, he has coordinated the Animal Science Education Consortium of 15 institutions in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region, presently creating digital image galleries at the National Agricultural Library to enhance teaching in the animal sciences nationally. Hafs enjoyed mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and enhanced careers for faculty at numerous institutions in the United States as well as in several other countries.
Value of club as of 3/31/2013: $40,418
