Andy Cole receives 2012 American Society of Animal Science American Feed Industry Association Award in Ruminant Nutrition
July 16, 2012 – Andy Cole, USDA-ARS scientist, will receive the 2012 American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) American Feed Industry Association Award in Ruminant Nutrition Research for his continued contributions in cattle nutrition. Cole will be honored at the ASAS national meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
Cole began with the USDA-ARS Conservation and Production Laboratory in Bushland, TX in 1976, where he provided leadership in two major research areas. Cole’s group developed a renowned program in stressed feeder calf research. This research into the stressors of weaning and transportation is applied today in management of feeder calves in the United States and Canada. In 1996, Cole’s research shifted to focus on the development of management and nutritional practices to decrease the adverse effects of cattle feeding operations on the environment without unfavorably affecting production efficiency. Much of this research is being implemented in the nation’s feedlots today.
Cole received his Bachelor’s in Animal Science from West Texas State University, and his Master’s and Ph.D. in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University. He has authored over 175 publications and has been principal or co-investigator on grants totaling $2,000,000 research dollars. Cole has been an adjunct professor at four universities, training 30 Master’s and Ph.D. students, and he has served in all officer positions on the Plains Nutrition Council. Cole has also served on the editorial board and as Section Editor for the Journal of Animal Science and on the editorial board for the Professional Animal Scientist.
The ASAS American Feed Industry Association Award in Ruminant Nutrition Research is awarded to animal scientists who have conducted original research concerned with ruminant nutrition and have published their research within the past 10 years. The American Society of Animal Science is a professional organization that serves more than 5,000 animal scientists and producers around the world.
