Mike Galyean receives 2012 ASAS Morrison Award

July 16, 2012 – Mike Galyean, current Interim Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech University, received the 2012 American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) Morrison Award for his continued contribution to the field of Animal Science. This award was presented at the ASAS national meeting in Phoenix, AZ.

Galyean’s teaching and research programs have had a significant impact on the beef cattle industry and the science of beef cattle nutrition. His contributions and innovative leadership are evident in many areas of cattle production, including digestive physiology of grazing animals, nutrition and health of feeder calves, prediction of feed intake, and nutrition and management of feedlot cattle. Over his 35-year career, Galyean and his students have authored 226 peer-reviewed journal articles, 56 invited papers and book chapters, 154 proceedings and research reports, and 179 abstracts. Galyean has also served as the Editor-Chief of the Journal of Animal Science and as the President of the American Society of Animal Science.

Galyean earned his B.S. from New Mexico State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from Oklahoma State University. He began his career in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences in 1977 at New Mexico State University, where he remained until 1990. He then moved to Clayton to serve as the Superintendent of the Clayton Livestock Research Center. In 1996, Glayean joined the West Texas A&M University faculty as a professor of Animal Science. He worked at WTAMU until 1998, when he then moved to his present faculty position in Lubbock.

The ASAS Morrison Award is awarded to animal scientists who have made a meritorious scientific contribution or discovery in research in the field. The American Society of Animal Science is a professional organization that serves more than 5,000 animal scientists and producers around the world.
