Study shows value of two treatments of foot rot in sheep
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Research at the University of Missouri-Columbia shows that either Nuflor or LA-200 works to treat foot rot in sheep. "We recommend you consult your veterinarian, but from our research it looks like two injections of either antibiotic is much more effective than just one," MU animal sciences student Seth VanDyke said in a report to the Midwest Section of the American Society of Animal Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa.
Nuflor is the trade name for the antibiotic florfenicol. It is approved as a treatment for respiration diseases in cattle and is not yet approved for foot rot in sheep.
LA-200 is the trade name for oxytetracycline and is approved for treatment of foot rot in sheep.
VanDyke, who conducted the study with MU animal scientists Duane Keisler and Jay Daniel, said one injection at foot trimming decreased the severity of foot rot infection, but a second injection decreased infection significantly more.
