SUBJECT: Annual Meeting 

The annual meeting of the Southern Branch, American Dairy Science Association and the Southern Section, American Society of Animal Science will be held in Fort Worth, Texas on January 27 to 31, 2001, in conjunction with the 98th Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists. Hotel Reservations: The Radisson Plaza Fort Worth has been designated as the headquarters hotel for animal and dairy science participants. Room reservation information will be sent in October directly from Vernon Boggs, Secretary-Treasurer, SAAS. 


Call for Papers:
Members are encouraged to submit abstracts of papers for oral presentation. Abstracts must be submitted electronically on or before October 17, 2000. Abstracts not meeting this deadline will be rejected. Other criteria for acceptance or rejection will include those outlined in the enclosed "Instructions for Abstract Submission" and "Quality Standards for Abstracts", which may be found on the ADSA/ASAS Web site:

Papers will be presented on January 27 to 30, 2001. A 2" x 2" slide projector will be provided in each room. Authors requiring other presentation equipment, such as LCD projectors, must make arrangements with the Program Chair prior to the meeting. Submission Requirements: Submission requirements are outlined in the instructions included in this mailing. After reading these instructions, if you have any questions regarding submission, contact JoAnna Wisniewski, ADSA Business Office (joannw@assochq.org).


Meeting Registration:
Registration for the Southern Branch American Dairy Science Association, Southern Section American Society of Animal Science, and the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists will be in an area to be designated in the Convention Center. Registration fees for the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists will be $40.00 for members and $5.00 for graduate students. Additional registration fees are:


Southern Branch, ADSA Members $10.00 (Total $50.00)
Graduate Students None (Total $ 5.00)
Southern Section, ASAS Members $20.00 (Total $60.00)
Graduate Students $15.00 (Total $20.00)

Extra copies of abstracts will be available at $5.00 per copy. The registration area will also serve as a message center. 

Placement Center
: Employers are invited to submit 20 copies of all position descriptions and prospective employees are encouraged to submit 20 copies of brief (2-page) resumes to Ronald Gough, Louisiana State University, Department of Dairy Science, Baton Rouge, LA, 70803-4404 by January 8, 2001.


Elections:
Two separate ballots are enclosed for election of Southern Branch ADSA and Southern Section ASAS officers. Southern Branch ADSA members are asked to indicate their preferences for the positions of Secretary-Treasurer and Director. Southern Section ASAS members are asked to cast their vote for one of the two nominees for the position of Secretary-Treasurer-Elect. Please mark the appropriate postcard ballot and mail to the address on the reverse side of the card prior to October 17, 2000. NOTE: Vote only in the election conducted by the society of which you are a member. 


Graduate Student Competitions: Both Southern Branch ADSA and Southern Section, ASAS will sponsor graduate student paper presentation competitions. Southern Branch ADSA Graduate Student Paper Contest:. The graduate student paper presentation competition will follow rules in effect for ADSA (refer to the ADSA/ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/ ). To enter the contest, follow the procedures outlined on the Website.  Awards of $300, $200, and $100 will be presented to the top three places, respectively. More than one graduate student competition paper can be submitted per institution.

Southern Section ASAS Graduate Student Abstract Competition: Abstracts will be submitted as described above (see ASubmission Requirements), and the Awards Competition Committee will select up to fifteen (15) abstracts, based on scientific merit for presentation. Dr. John C. Spitzer, Clemson University will send rules and guidelines on the awards competition to each selected participant. The contestant must be the  senior author, be 35 years of age or less at the time of submission, and cannot hold academic rank above assistant professor. Persons who have placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in previous Awards competitions are ineligible. Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three placings, respectively. Further information regarding the competition can be found on the ADSA/ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/ Kemin Industries, Inc. will sponsor the Graduate Student Awards Competition this year.

Undergraduate Research Abstract Competition: Junior or senior level students from institutions in the Southern Region with degree programs in Agriculture are encouraged to present data from their research efforts. Abstracts should be submitted as described above (see "Submission Requirements"). University verification that the student is enrolled at the time of the abstract submission, must be mailed to Dr. Jeannette Moore, North Carolina State University. Note that the author may be a graduate student at the time the paper is presented. The abstracts will be reviewed by the Teaching and Undergraduate Education ADSA/ASAS Joint Committee (Jeannette Moore, Chair). Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three places, respectively. Further information regarding the competition can be found on the ADSA/ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/ Degussa-Hüls Corporation will sponsor the Undergraduate Research Paper Competition.

Southern Branch ADSA:

Honor Award: Each year the Southern Branch recognizes and honors one of its members for distinguished service to the dairy industry. Nominations must be supported by three (3) copies of supporting information and should be mailed to Dr. Kenneth R. Butcher, North Carolina State University. Nominations must be postmarked no later than October 17, 2000. Other rules, and information on materials to be submitted by the nominator, and a nomination form can be found on the ADSA/ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/

Southern Section ASAS:

Distinguished Service Award: Each year the Southern Section recognizes and honors one of its members for outstanding service to the livestock industry. Nominees must be members of the American Society of Animal Science for two (2) consecutive years prior to the date of their nomination. Any Southern Section member working in the Southern Region (defined in Paragraph 4, Article VII, Page 604, J. Anim. Sci., Vol. 24, May 1965) is eligible. Any active member in the American Society of Animal Science-Southern Section in good standing, except Southern Section ASAS officers, may make nominations. Self-nominations shall not be eligible. Nominations should be mailed to Dr. Bill Luce, Oklahoma State University and must be postmarked no later than October 17, 2000.
