The annual meeting of the Southern Section, American Society of Animal Science will be held in Orlando, Florida on February 1 to 6, 2002, in conjunction with the 99th Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists. Hotel Reservations: Room reservation information will be sent in October directly from Mark Legendre, Secretary-Treasurer, SAAS.

Call for Papers: Members are encouraged to submit abstracts of papers for oral presentation. Abstracts must be submitted electronically on or before October 16, 2001.  Abstracts not meeting this deadline will be rejected.  Other criteria for acceptance or rejection will include those outlined in the enclosed “Instructions for Abstract Submission” and “Quality Standards for Abstracts”, which may be found on the ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2002/index.html.  Papers will be presented on February 4 to 6, 2002.  A 2" x 2" slide projector will be provided in each room.  Authors requiring other presentation equipment, such as LCD projectors, must make arrangements with the Program Chair prior to the meeting.  Suggestions for projected material (“Slide Preparation Guidelines for Oral Presentations”) can be found on the ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2002/index.html.

Submission Requirements: Submission requirements are outlined in the instructions included in this mailing.  After reading these instructions, if you have any questions regarding submission, contact Lorraine Halderman, ASAS Business Office (lorraineh@assochq.org).

Meeting Registration: Registration for the Southern Section American Society of Animal Science and the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists will be in an area to be designated in the Convention Center.  Registration fees for the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists will be $40.00 for members and $5.00 for graduate students.  Additional registration fees are as noted:

Extra copies of abstracts will be available at $5.00 per copy.  The registration area will also serve as a message center. 

Election: A separate ballot is enclosed for election of the position of Secretary-Treasurer-Elect of Southern Section ASAS.  Please mark the appropriate postcard ballot and mail to the address on the reverse side of the card prior to October 16, 2001.

Graduate Student Abstract Competition: Abstracts will be submitted as described above (see “Submission Requirements”), and the Awards Competition Committee will select up to fifteen (15) abstracts, based on scientific merit for presentation.  Dr. Beth Kegley, University of Arkansas will send rules and guidelines on the awards competition to each selected participant.  The contestant must be the senior author, be 35 years of age or less at the time of submission, and cannot hold academic rank above assistant professor.  Persons who have placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in previous Awards competitions are ineligible.  Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three placings, respectively.  Further information regarding the competition can be found on the ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2002/index.html

Undergraduate Research Abstract Competition: Junior or senior level students from institutions in the Southern Region with degree programs in Agriculture are encouraged to present data from their research efforts.  Abstracts should be submitted as described above (see “Submission Requirements”).  University verification that the student is enrolled at the time of the abstract submission, must be mailed to Dr. Dale Coleman, Auburn University.  Note that the author may be a graduate student at the time the paper is presented.  The abstracts will be reviewed by the Teaching and Undergraduate Education Committee (Dale Coleman, Chair).  Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three places, respectively.  Further information regarding the competition can be found on the ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2002/index.html.

AWARDS

Members are strongly encouraged to nominate individuals for the following awards.  NOTE: All nomination forms can be found on the ASAS Web Site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2002/index.html.

Nominations must be postmarked no later than October 16, 2001

Distinguished Service Award: Each year the Southern Section recognizes and honors one of its members for outstanding service to the livestock industry.  Nominees must be members of the American Society of Animal Science for two (2) consecutive years prior to the date of their nomination.  Any Southern Section member working in the Southern Region (defined in Paragraph 4, Article VII, Page 604, J. Anim. Sci., Vol. 24, May 1965) is eligible.  Any active member in the American Society of Animal Science-Southern Section in good standing, except Southern Section ASAS officers, may make nominations. Self-nominations shall not be eligible.  Nominations should be mailed to Dr. George Mitchell, University of Kentucky and must be postmarked no later than October 16, 2001.  Other rules, and information on materials to be submitted by the nominator can be found on the ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2002/index.html.

Swine Industry Award for Innovation: In addition to the regularly submitted abstract, six (6) copies of the abstract and entry form should be submitted to Dr. Debra Aaron, University of Kentucky.
