Southern Section ASAS
2003

  1. Name of Award: Extension Award - Southern Section, American Society of Animal Science.
  2. Description of Award: $500 and a Plaque.
  3. Purpose: To stimulate outstanding achievements in Extension Animal Science programs.
  4. Eligibility for Nomination:
  1. A nominee must be an Extension Specialist in the Southern Region and must have made an outstanding and noteworthy contribution in the field of Animal Science. The contribution must pertain to the following areas of work: (a) beef cattle, (b) swine, (c) sheep, (d) horses, (e) goats, (f) 4-H livestock, and (g) meats.
  2. The nominee must be actively engaged in Extension at the time of nomination, with at least a 50% Extension appointment. The nomination must be based on Extension accomplishments.
  3. Eligibility for the award requires membership in the American Society of Animal Science. Previous winners of the Extension Award of the American Society of Animal Science are not eligible.
  4. Any active member in good standing of the American Society of Animal Science may make a nomination.
  5. No officer of the Southern Section Extension Section - ASAS, while holding such position, shall be eligible for this award.
  6. The selection committee shall consist of: 1) outgoing Chairman of Extension Southern Section - ASAS (non-voting member), 2) past recipient of the award, 3) President-Elect, Southern Section - ASAS, 4) Chairman Elect Extension, Southern Section-ASAS, and 5) a member selected by the President of the Southern Section-ASAS to balance species and representation. If a member of this committee is nominated for the award, this person will be replaced by the President of the Southern Section-ASAS, so as to receive consideration as a nominee. All members of the committee are on a one-year term.
  7. Nominations are to be sent to the Extension Award Chair; Dr. Matthew H. Poore, North Carolina State University, Box 7621, Raleigh, NC 27695-7621, and must be postmarked no later than October 16, 2002. Nominations made in one year will not be automatically carried over.
  8. Material to be supplied by nominator:
    1. Six (6) copies of a dossier that contains the following material:
    1. Biography of the nominee, not to exceed one typed page, double-spaced (2670 characters and spaces).
    2. Extent of the nominees acceptance and application of technology in Extension educational programs not to exceed one typed page, double-spaced (2670 characters and spaces).
    3. Influence of the nominees Extension programs on the livestock industry and the welfare of people not to exceed one typed page, double-spaced (2670 characters and spaces).
    4. Qualities of leadership as demonstrated by ability to influence others to act and adopt improved practices not to exceed one typed page, double-spaced (2670 characters and spaces).
    5. A complete bibliography of publications by the nominee.
  9. Copies of research or extension publications authored by the nominee are not needed. However, if the Chairman of the Award Committee feels that publications are necessary to adequately evaluate certain nominees, the Chairman will ask the nominator to obtain and provide the needed publications.
  10. Any member of the Award Committee may ask the Committee Chairman to request additional information about a nominee.
  11. The Chairman of the Award Committee shall notify the donor of the winner stating the individuals full name and time and place of presentation of the award.
