The annual meeting of the
Southern Section, American Society of Animal Science will be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma on February 14 to 18, 2004, in conjunction with the 101st
Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists.

Hotel Reservations: Room reservation information will be sent in October directly from
Mark Legendre, Secretary-Treasurer, SAAS.
Call for Papers: Members are encouraged to submit abstracts of papers for oral
presentation. Abstracts must be submitted electronically on or before 11:59 p.m. CDT October 15, 2003. Abstracts not meeting this deadline will be
rejected. Other criteria for acceptance
or rejection will include those outlined in the “Instructions for Abstract
Submission” and “Quality Standards for Abstracts”, which may be found on the
ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2004/index.html. Papers will
be presented on February 16 and 17, 2004.
A 2" x 2" slide projector will be provided in each room. Authors requiring other presentation
equipment, such as LCD projectors, must make arrangements with the Program
Chair prior to the meeting. Suggestions
for projected material (“Slide Preparation Guidelines for Oral Presentations”)
can be found on the ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2004/index.html.
Submission Requirements: All abstracts must be submitted electronically via
the World Wide Web, at http://www.asas.org/southern/2004/index.html. Instructions for submitting the abstract are
available on the Web site. You will be given a tracking code and password
when you submit the abstract. It is very
important that you keep a record of these.
You may revise submitted abstracts any time before the deadline, but you
can only access your abstract using the password and tracking code. After reading these instructions, if you have
any questions regarding submission, contact Lisa Cobb, FASS Business Office
(lisac@assochq.org).
Meeting Registration: Registration for the Southern Section American Society of Animal
Science and the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists will be in an
area to be designated in the Adams Mark
Hotel. Extra copies of abstracts
will be available at $5.00 per copy. The
registration area will also serve as a message center. Registration fees for the Southern
Association of Agricultural Scientists and Southern Section ASAS Members will
be $40.00 (SAAS Fee) + $20.00 (ASAS Fee) = $60.00 total for members and $5.00
(SAAS Fee) + $15.00 (ASAS Fee) = $20.00 total for graduate students.
Election: Members of Southern Section
ASAS are encouraged to vote for Secretary-Treasurer Elect. The Nomination
Committee has submitted the following individuals for consideration by the
Southern Section membership: Dr.
Chadwick Chase, Jr., (USDA-ARS-Brooksville, FL) and Dr. Elizabeth B.
Kegley (University of Arkansas) for the position of Secretary-Treasurer
Elect. The election will be conducted
with electronic ballots at http://www.asas.org/southern/2004/index.html. Votes can be
cast between
September 3, 2003 and October 15, 2003.
Graduate Student Competition: Abstracts will be submitted as described above (see
“Submission Requirements”), and the Awards Competition Committee will select up
to fifteen (15) abstracts, based on scientific merit for presentation. Dr. L.
Wayne Greene, Texas A&M University will send rules and guidelines on
the awards competition to each selected participant. The contestant must be the
senior author, be 35 years of age or less at the time of submission, and cannot
hold academic rank above assistant professor.
Persons who have placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd
in previous Awards competitions are ineligible.
Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three
placings, respectively. Further

Undergraduate Research Abstract Competition: Students classified as
either a Junior or Senior at the time of submission and from institutions in
the Southern Region with degree programs in Agriculture are encouraged to
present data from their research efforts.
Abstracts should be submitted as described above (see “Submission
Requirements”). University verification
that the student is enrolled at the time of the abstract must be mailed to Dr. Brian J. Rude, Mississippi State
University. Note that the author may
be enrolled as a graduate student at the time the paper is presented. The abstracts will be reviewed by the
Teaching and Undergraduate Education Committee (Dr. Brian J. Rude). Awards
of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three places,
respectively. Further information

Members are strongly
encouraged to nominate individuals for the following awards. These awards are one way that we can
recognize the outstanding achievements of our colleagues and students. Nominations
must be submitted electronically. NOTE: All nomination information can be

Nominations must be
submitted no later than October 15,
2003
Distinguished Service Award: Each year the Southern Section recognizes and honors
one of its members for outstanding service to the livestock industry. Nominees must be members of the American
Society of Animal Science for two (2) consecutive years prior to the date of
their nomination. Any Southern Section
member working in the Southern Region (defined in Paragraph 4, Article VII,
Page 604, J. Anim. Sci., Vol. 24, May 1965) is eligible. Any active member in the American Society of
Animal Science-Southern Section in good standing, except Southern Section ASAS
officers, may make nominations. Self-nominations shall not be eligible. Nominations must be submitted on the web no
later than October 15, 2003. Other rules and information on materials to

Swine Industry Award for Innovation: All abstracts submitted which have as the
primary focus swine research, education, and/or extension will be reviewed by the
NPR Committee. Complete information can
