The annual meeting of the Southern Section, American Society of Animal Science will be held in Little Rock, Arkansas on February 5-9, 2005, in conjunction with the 102nd Annual Meeting of the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists. Hotel Reservations: Room reservation information will be sent in October directly from Mark Legendre, Secretary-Treasurer, SAAS.
Call for Papers: Members are encouraged to submit abstracts of papers for oral presentation. Abstracts must be submitted electronically on or before 11:59 p.m. CDT October 13, 2004. Abstracts not meeting this deadline will be rejected. Other criteria for acceptance or rejection will include those outlined in the “Instructions for Abstract Submission” and “Quality Standards for Abstracts”, which may be found on the ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2005/ Papers will be presented on February 7 and 8, 2005. Presenters will be expected to submit PowerPoint shows for their oral presentations to the respective committee chair in advance of the meeting (more details will be provided by the respective chair). Committee chairs will be expected to provide a computer with all shows pre-loaded and a video projector for their session. Any other video presentation equipment must be provided by the presenter.
Submission Requirements: All abstracts must be submitted electronically via the World Wide Web: http://www.asas.org/southern/2005. Instructions for submitting the abstract are available on the Web site. You will be given a tracking code and password when you submit the abstract. It is very important that you keep a record of these. You may revise submitted abstracts any time before the deadline, but you can only access your abstract using the password and tracking code. After reading these instructions, if you have any questions regarding submission, contact the FASS Business Office (abstract@assochq.org).
Meeting Registration: Registration for the Southern Section American Society of Animal Science and the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists will be in an area to be designated in the The Peabody Little Rock Hotel. Extra copies of abstracts will be available at $5.00 per copy. The registration area will also serve as a message center. Registration fees for the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists and Southern Section ASAS Members will be $40.00 (SAAS Fee) + $20.00 (ASAS Fee) = $60.00 total for members and $5.00 (SAAS Fee) + $15.00 (ASAS Fee) = $20.00 total for graduate students.
Election: Members of Southern Section ASAS are encouraged to vote for Secretary-Treasurer Elect. The Nomination Committee has submitted the following individuals for consideration by the Southern Section membership: Dr. Elizabeth B. Kegley (University of Arkansas) and Dr. Matthew H. Poore (North Carolina State University) for the position of Secretary-Treasurer Elect. The election will be conducted with electronic ballots on the ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2005. Votes can be cast between September 7, 2004 and October 13, 2004.
Graduate Student Competition: Abstracts will be submitted as described above (see “Submission Requirements”), and the Awards Competition Committee will select up to fifteen (15) abstracts based on scientific merit for presentation. Contestant must be the senior author and cannot hold academic rank above assistant professor. Dr. Chance Brooks, Texas Tech University will send rules and guidelines on the awards competition to each selected participant and verify the eligibility of the contestant with the appropriate department chair/head. Persons who have placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in previous Awards competitions are ineligible. Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three placings, respectively. Undergraduate Research Abstract Competition: Students classified as either a Junior or Senior at the time of submission and from institutions in the Southern Region with degree programs in Agriculture are encouraged to present data from their research efforts. Abstracts should be submitted as described above (see “Submission Requirements”). University verification that the student is enrolled at the time of the abstract must be mailed to Dr. Juan Marcos Fernandez, Professor; Louisiana State University; Dept. of Animal Science; J.B. Francioni Bldg, Room 205; Baton Rouge, LA 70803; mfernandez@agctr.lsu.edu. Note that the author may be enrolled as a graduate student at the time the paper is presented. The abstracts will be reviewed by the Teaching and Undergraduate Education Committee (Dr. J. M. Fernandez). Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three places, respectively. Members are strongly encouraged to nominate individuals for the following awards. These awards are one way that we can recognize the outstanding achievements of our colleagues and students. Nominations must be submitted no later than October 13, 2004
Distinguished Service Award: Each year the Southern Section recognizes and honors one of its members for outstanding service to the livestock industry. Nominees must be members of the American Society of Animal Science for two (2) consecutive years prior to the date of their nomination. Any Southern Section member as defined in the ASAS Constitution and By Laws located on the web site: http://www.asas.org/bylaws.pdf is eligible. Any active member in the American Society of Animal Science-Southern Section in good standing, except Southern Section ASAS officers, may make nominations. Self-nominations shall not be eligible. Nominations must be submitted on the web no later than October 13, 2004. Other rules and information on materials to be submitted by the nominator can be found on the ASAS Web site: http://www.asas.org/southern/2005.
