Each year the Southern Section recognizes and honors one of its members for outstanding service to the livestock industry.  Nominees must be members of the American Society of Animal Science for two (2) consecutive years prior to the date of their nomination.  Any Southern Section member defined in the ASAS Constitution and By Laws located on the web site: http://www.asas.org/bylaws.pdf is eligible.  Any active member in the American Society of Animal Science-Southern Section in good standing, except Southern Section ASAS officers, may make nominations. Self-nominations shall not be eligible.  Nominees are not carried forward from year to year; therefore, nominators should update and submit data on those previously nominated.  Nominations must be submitted to the web site (http://www.asas.org/southern/2006) no later than October 12, 2005.

 

Items to be submitted by the nominator:

 

1.                  Summary statements on work and importance to animal science and the Southern Region, not to exceed 8000 characters and spaces.

 

2.                  Biographical information, not to exceed 2670 characters and spaces.

 

Extension Award

 

Southern Section ASAS

2006

 

I.    Name of Award: Extension Award - Southern Section, American Society of Animal Science.

II.   Description of Award: $500 and a Plaque.

III. Purpose:  To stimulate outstanding achievements in Extension Animal Science programs.

IV. Eligibility for Nomination:

A.  A nominee must be an Extension Specialist in the Southern Region and must have made an outstanding and noteworthy contribution in the field of Animal Science.  The contribution must pertain to the following areas of work: (a) beef cattle, (b) swine, (c) sheep, (d) horses, (e) goats, (f) 4-H livestock, and (g) meats.

B.   The nominee must be actively engaged in Extension at the time of nomination, with at least a 50% Extension appointment.  The nomination must be based on Extension accomplishments.

C.  Eligibility for the award requires membership in the American Society of Animal Science.  Previous winners of the Extension Award of the American Society of Animal Science are not eligible.

D.  Any active member in good standing of the American Society of Animal Science may make a nomination.

E.   No officer of the Southern Section Extension Section - ASAS, while holding such position, shall be eligible for this award.

F.   The selection committee shall consist of: 1) outgoing Chairman of Extension Southern Section - ASAS (non-voting member), 2) past recipient of the award, 3) President-Elect, Southern Section - ASAS, 4) Chairman Elect Extension, Southern Section-ASAS, and 5) a member selected by the President of the Southern Section-ASAS to balance species and representation. If a member of this committee is nominated for the award, this person will be replaced by the President of the Southern Section-ASAS, so as to receive consideration as a nominee.  All members of the committee are on a one-year term.

G.  Nominations are to be submitted electronically to the web (http://www.asas.org/southern/2006) and must be submitted no later than October 12, 2005.  Nominations made in one year will not be automatically carried over, but may be updated and resubmitted.

H.  Material to be submitted by nominator:

1.   Biography of the nominee, not to exceed 2670 characters and spaces.

2.   Extent of the nominee’s acceptance and application of technology in Extension educational programs not to exceed 2670 characters and spaces.

3.   Influence of the nominee’s Extension programs on the livestock industry and the welfare of people not to exceed 2670 characters and spaces.

4.   Qualities of leadership as demonstrated by ability to influence others to act and adopt improved practices not to exceed 2670 characters and spaces.

5.   A complete bibliography of publications by the nominee.

I.    Copies of research or extension publications authored by the nominee are not needed.  However, if the Chairman of the Award Committee feels that publications are necessary to adequately evaluate certain nominees, the Chairman will ask the nominator to obtain and provide the needed publications.

J.    Any member of the Award Committee may ask the Committee Chairman to request additional information about a nominee.

K.  The Chairman of the Award Committee shall notify the donor of the winner stating the individual’s full name and time and place of presentation of the award.

 

 

Outstanding Young Animal Scientist Award - Education

The Southern Section of the American Society of Animal Science offers a Young Animal Scientist Award in Education.  The award is presented at the Annual Meeting of the Southern Section of the American Society of Animal Science.  The award consists of a plaque, $500 and recognition at the Annual Meeting of the Southern Section of the American Society of Animal Science.

 

The requirements for eligibility for this award are as follows:

 

I.       The recipient of the Young Animal Scientist Award must be a member of the American Society of Animal Science, and the recipient must have conducted the work upon which the nomination is based in a state or territory in the Southern Section of the American Society of Animal Science.

 

II.      The recipient must be less than forty (40) years of age.

 

III.    The nominee must not have received a national award from the American Society of Animal Science.

 

IV.    The nominee must have made an outstanding contribution in education in the field of Animal Science; these accomplishments may be in the public, industry, and/or private sectors.  The nominee must be actively engaged in education at the time of nomination.

 

V.     The nominee’s teaching and/or extension program(s) must pertain to beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, sheep, goats and/or swine.  The individual’s program must be related to breeding, nutrition, physiology and/or management of these animals or to the products (meat, dairy products, etc.) of these animals.

 

VI.    Nominations must be submitted to the web site (http://www.asas.org/southern/2006) no later than October 12, 2005.

 

VII.   Materials to be submitted by the nominator:

 

1.         A summary statement giving the importance of the nominee’s work to the appropriate discipline in Animal Science and to the livestock industry, not to exceed 2670 characters and spaces.

 

            2.         A biography of the nominee, not to exceed 2670 characters and spaces.

 

3.         A list of publications, presentations and (or) educational materials developed by the nominee and, where appropriate, evidence for excellence in teaching.

 

4.         Letters from not less than three (3) and not more than six (6) persons representing 1) the nominee’s institution and 2) agriculture and related industries, showing the service of the nominee to animal agriculture.

National Pork Board Swine Industry Award for Innovation

Purpose: To promote and reward original and innovative ideas that are scientifically based and that have relevance to the pork industry.

 

Nature of the Award: The National Pork Board will provide one $500 award for the abstract which best describes either:

 

      1.   Work that can be immediately applied to the pork industry.

      2.   Work that has potential future application to the pork industry.

      3.   Work that involves classroom teaching, extension and service or outreach programs related to the pork industry.

 

A check will be provided to the authors’ home institution as a grant for their use.  A plaque will be presented during the Southern ASAS Annual Meeting.

 

Eligibility:

1.   Abstracts must relate to pigs or pork products.  Comparative work among species that includes pigs is eligible. 

2.   Abstracts involving experimental models using animals other than swine are eligible if the work is relevant to the pork industry.

3.   At least one abstract author must be an ASAS member in good standing.

4.   Abstracts found unacceptable as described in the ASAS “Quality Standards for Abstracts” will not be considered.

5.   Abstracts must be accepted for presentation at the Southern Section ASAS Annual Meeting.

6.   Previous recipients of this award are eligible for the award.

 

Selection Procedure: The selection committee will be asked to review all abstracts submitted and accepted for presentation at the 2006 Southern Section ASAS Annual Meeting which meet the eligibility requirements outlined above.  This procedure is a modification from previous years.  The chair of the committee is:

Selection Criteria:

1.   Degree that the reported work:

a.   Creates an opportunity previously unavailable to advance the swine industry by solving a problem.

b.   Addresses a previously recognized issue important to the swine industry.

 

2.   Degree that the scientific or educational process used:

a.   Contributed to understanding previously unavailable in biology or education.

b.   Employs an untried approach that effectively addresses a conceptual problem.

 

3.   Soundness of approach.

 

4.   Relevance of work to the pork industry.

 

 

Student Abstract Competitions

Southern Section ASAS

2006

 

 

Call for Abstracts: Abstracts must be submitted on or before October 12, 2005.  Those submitted after October 12 will not be accepted.  The quality standards for abstracts can also be found on this Web site. Presenters will be expected to submit PowerPoint shows for their oral presentations to the respective committee chair in advance of the meeting (more details will be provided by the respective chair).  Committee chairs will be expected to provide a computer with all shows pre-loaded and a video projector for their session.  Any other video presentation equipment must be provided by the presenter.

 

Graduate Student Abstract Competition: The Awards Competition Committee will select up to fifteen (15) abstracts, based on scientific merit, for presentation.  Contestant must be the senior author and cannot hold academic rank above assistant professor.  Dr. Donald E. Franke, Louisiana State University will send rules and guidelines on the awards competition to each selected participant and verify the eligibility of the contestant with the appropriate department chair/head.  Persons who have placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in previous Awards competitions are ineligible.  Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three placings, respectively.  The criteria for evaluating the competition papers will be: clearness and correctness of the abstract; knowledge of the subject area; research quality and innovation; organization of presentation; presentation and personal attributes; and appropriate use, clarity, and number of visuals.

 

Undergraduate Research Abstract Competition: Junior or senior level students from institutions in the South­ern Region with degree programs in Agriculture are encouraged to present data from their research efforts.  Abstracts for the research paper competition should be submitted according to the directions described in “Call for Papers”.  University verification that the student is enrolled, at the time of abstract submission, must be mailed to Dr. A. Hayden Brown, Jr.  Note that the author may be a graduate student at the time the paper is presented.  The abstracts will be reviewed by the Teaching and Undergraduate Education Committee (Dr. A. Hayden Brown, Jr., Chair).  Please note that a manuscript is not required for participation in the Undergraduate Research Paper Awards Competition. Awards of $150, $100, and $50 will be presented to the top three placings, respectively.  The criteria for evaluating the competition abstracts will be: clearness and correctness of the abstract; knowledge of the subject area; research quality and innovation; organization of presentation; presentation and personal attributes; and appropriate use, clarity, and number of visuals.  The papers will be presented in the Teaching and Undergraduate Session.
