APPLIED ANIMAL SCIENCE AWARD
The Western Section, American Society of Animal Science (WSASAS) will recognize excellence in applied animal science research at its summer meeting in Bozeman, Montana on June 20-22, 2001. The award will be based on WSASAS abstracts and proceedings, under the criteria of-1) applicability to current production systems, 2) potential for enhancing return on investment, and 3) new and innovative approaches to existing production problems. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards will include a certificate of recognition and cash awards of $400, $300 and $200, respectively. The papers will be evaluated and chosen by an ad hoc committee consisting of industry and extension livestock specialists, which will be chaired by the WSASAS Industry Representative and overseen by the WSASAS executive committee. Awards will be based on content and presented at the banquet Thursday evening, June 21, 2001. Please address questions to J.H. Killen (jhkillen@aol.com).

This will be the only communication for presenters to see the day and time for their presentation.
TOUR INFORMATION BOOTH
Rather than offering spouse and children's tours during the 2001 WSASAS meeting, we would like to help you design your own personal tour or provide suggestion for activities for your children. To that end, we will have a "Tour Information Booth" set up in the Strand Student Union Building to help you plan your activities while in Bozeman.

Saturday Tour - The morning tour will visit the Flying D ranch, which is owned by Turner Enterprises. The ranch raises approximately 3000 head of bison, as well as elk and other wildlife on 20,000 acres of foothill-mountain rangeland. The ranch manager, Mark Kossler, will host the tour and answer questions. The afternoon tour will visit Sitz Angus ranch, which is one of the largest registered Black Angus herds in the U.S. The other half of the afternoon will be spent on the Cooper Hereford ranch, which is one of the leading purebred Hereford operations in the world. The full day and morning only tour will leave from the south end of the Strand Student Union building at 7:30 am Saturday morning and return to the student union building at approximately 5:30 pm.
For those interested in only the morning tour of the Flying D ranch, vans will return you to campus immediately after lunch at the Sitz Angus ranch. For those interested in only the afternoon tour of Sitz Angus and Cooper Hereford ranches, vans will leave from the south end of the Strand student union building at 11:00 am and you will arrive at the Sitz ranch in time for lunch.
Lunch at the Sitz ranch is included in the registration cost for both all and half-day tours. Sorry, no private vehicles will be allowed on the tour and all tour participants must be registered for the tour. Children under 12 years of age must have an accompanying adult; Children 6 years and under are free.

Bozeman is located in one of the most beautiful parts of the U.S. Bozeman is approximately 100 miles from Yellowstone Park and only a few minutes from blue ribbon trout fishing, a number of hot springs resorts, and excellent hiking opportunities-- just to name of few of the many things to see and do in our area. In addition, Bozeman has excellent shopping and dining opportunities, golf, museums, and other fun and educational activities for the whole family.

MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY - BOZEMAN
Montana State University-Bozeman is conveniently located only a 15-minute walk from downtown. The MSU campus offers spectacular scenery, with views of the Spanish Peaks, Gallatin, Bridger, and Tobacco Root Mountains. The Strand Union (with bookstore, restaurant, recreation center, copy service, lounges, and many other services) will serve at the base of operations for the WSASAS meeting. The Renne Library, residence halls, and athletic facilities are immediately at hand.

A guest pass is available for conference participants interested in using the intramural athletic facilities (pool, gym, weight room, etc.) and can be purchased during the conference at Room 202, Shroyer. This is just a five-minute walk from the Strand Union Building. The cost of the pass is $5.00/day or $15.00/week. The facilities are open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
A limited supply of bicycles are available for rent on campus at the Outdoor Recreation Center located in the SOB Barn. Participants will be required to have conference nametags when renting equipment.
Housing is available through the MSU residence halls. Please specify your requirements on the registration form if you wish to reserve these accommodations. Payment for residence hall accommodations will be added to your registration fee. Residence hall accommodations are suites that range in size from 2 to 4 one-person bedrooms with a shared bath. The units do not have air conditioning. The rate is $25.00 per night per bedroom.
In addition to MSU residence hall housing, blocks of rooms have been reserved at the following hotels in Bozeman. Call the hotel directly to make your reservation and identify yourself as a member of the American Society of Animal Science Conference. After the cut-off date, the group rate is not guaranteed and rooms are based upon availability.

Taxi service is available from the airport. In addition, many of the hotels also provide complimentary airport shuttle service.
On Thursday, June 21, the Awards Barbeque will be hosted by the American Simmental Association, located just 15-20 minutes away by bus from the Montana State University campus. Buses will be provided and will leave from the south entrance of the Strand Union Building at 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Return times will be announced at the conference.
BOZEMAN WEATHER
June temperatures vary dramatically but typically weather is warm with the possibility of thunder showers. Evenings are cool and a jacket or sweater is advised. Daylight at this latitude extends outdoor activities into the evening.
