Colleagues,
The
2001 Annual Meeting of the Western Section, American Society of Animal Science
(WSASAS) will be held June 20-22 on the campus of Montana State
University. We invite you to come to
Bozeman and participate in this excellent conference. Highlights of the meeting are listed below.
1. A
symposium will be held on June 20 entitled:
Using Science and Marketing in
Producing and Delivering Value Added Products for the Consumer. The Symposium will feature nationally
recognized experts presenting their vision on AMarketing
Value-Added Products in the New Economy@ and AAdding Value to Beef with Technology to
Meet Market Needs@.
2. Dr.
Eric Bradford, University of California - Davis and the recipient of the 2000
WSASAS Distinguished Service Award, will provide a seminar immediately before
the graduate student competition papers on June 21.
3. Presentations in the WSASAS Graduate
Student Competition will be given on June 21.
4. Presentations
in the WSASAS Extension Symposium on June 21 will highlight innovative
extension programs throughout the West.
5. A
graduate student forum at noon on June 21 will focus on career
development. Representatives of the
animal industries, state agencies, biotechnology firms and educational
institutions will participate on a panel to present and discuss the wide
variety of career opportunities in Animal Science.
6. A
welcome reception will be held on the MSU campus on June 20. On June 21, a barbecue/award ceremony
followed by live western music will take place at the American Simmental
Association headquarters. These events
will be an enjoyable opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones.
7. A
tour on June 23 will include Ted Turner=s 3000 head bison operation, Sitz Angus
Ranch, one of the largest registered Black Angus herds in the U.S., and Cooper
Hereford Ranch, one of the leading purebred Hereford operations in the world.
8. As
always, there will be high quality oral and poster presentations in the
disciplines of animal science. Over 145
abstracts have been submitted.

SOON AS POSSIBLE. June is the
beginning of the tourist season in Montana and therefore, accommodations will
fill up. Excellent rates are offered on
a Aspace available@ basis at a new campus housing option (similar to the campus
accommodations for the 2000 WSASAS meeting at UC-Davis). Blocks of rooms have been reserved for
WSASAS participants. More information
on these accommodations is included in this mailing.
Rather
than offering spouse and children's tours during the 2001 WSASAS meeting, MSU
personnel will help you design your own personal tour or provide suggestions
for activities for you, your family, and/or your children. A "Tour Information Booth" will be
set up in the Strand Student Union Building to help you with your plans. Please see the enclosed information sheet
for details.
WSASAS
members that have passed away are remembered each year at the annual meeting.

committee assignments have been made for 2000-01. Please contact the committee chairs or any member of the
executive committee if you have an issue or concern you would like addressed.

take a moment to complete and return the enclosed ballot for the 2001 WSASAS
elections. The ballot should be
postmarked by May 11, 2001.
We
